Shobu Yarlagadda is an Indian American environmental engineer – turned film producer, and the son-in-law of veteran film maker K. Raghavendra Rao.[1][2] He is the co-founder and CEO of Arka Media Works, a film production company known for its works exclusively in Telugu cinema. Shobu has garnered the National Film Award, two state Nandi Awards, three Filmfare South Awards, and the Telstra People's Choice Award.[3] In 2015, Shobhu produced Baahubali: The Beginning, which recorded the highest grossing Indian film within India.[4][5][6] Touted to be the most expensive Indian film, the film was featured in the BBC's documentary on 100 Years of Indian cinema.[7][8] [9]

He produced the two part Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) premiered at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) premiered at the British Film Institute,[10][11] while becoming the highest grossing Indian multilingual film franchise of all time globally with a cumulative box office earnings of approximately 1,900 crore (US$260 million).[12][13][14][15] The first part of the Telugu film has received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, and got nominated for Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film by the American Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.[16] The second part has garnered the Telstra People's Choice Award at the 2017 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.[17]

Early life

Shobu Yarlagadda is the son-in-law of veteran director K. Raghavendra Rao. Shobhu was Born in Gudivada in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh.[3] He graduated in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Andhra University in 1992. He went on to Texas A&M and graduated in Agricultural Engineering in 1995. For over a year and a half, he worked as an Air Resources Engineer in Greater Los Angeles Area for California Air Resources Board. In 2001 he established Arka Mediaworks with Prasad Devineni.[3]

Career

In 2001, he established Arka Mediaworks; Arka means sunrays in Sanskrit. It produces television content in six languages (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Oriya, Bangla and Marathi). He has worked as line producer for films such as Morning Raaga, and Anaganaga O Dheerudu. He was Executive Producer for films such as Bobby and Pandurangadu[18]
