Shaktikanta Das (IAST: Śaktikānta Dāsa) (born 26 February 1957) is a retired 1980 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He currently is a member of the 15th Finance Commission of India, and India's Sherpa to the G-20. He has served as the Economic Affairs Secretary of India, the Revenue Secretary of India and as the Fertilizers Secretary of India.
Education
Shaktikanta Das is a graduate (BA) and a postgraduate (MA) in History.[1]
Career
As an IAS officer
Shaktikanta Das served in various key positions for both the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, like as Principal Secretary (Industries), Special Commissioner (Revenue), Secretary (Revenue), Secretary (Commercial Taxes), Project Director of Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society and as the District Magistrate and Collector of Dindigul and Kancheepuram districts in the Government of Tamil Nadu,[1] and as the Union Economic Affairs Secretary, Union Revenue Secretary, Union Fertilizers Secretary, Special Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Finance and as a Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure of the Ministry of Finance in the Union Government.[1]
Das also had a stint in Mahindra Industrial Park Ltd (Mahindra World City), on deputation to a private sector company under Rule 6(2)(ii) of The Indian Administrative Service (Cadre) Rules, 1954.[1][2]
Revenue Secretary
Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the Union Revenue Secretary by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in June 2014,[3][4][5] he assumed the office of Secretary on 16 June 2014,[1] and demitted it on 31 August 2015.[1]
Economic Affairs Secretary
Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the Union Economic Affairs Secretary by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in August 2016,[6][7][8] he assumed the office of Secretary on 31 August 2016,[1][8] and admitted it and simultaneously superannuated from service on 28 May 2017,[1][8] after being given a three-month extension by the government.[9][10][11]
During his tenure as the Union Economic Affairs Secretary, Shaktikanta Das was widely regarded as one of the most powerful people in India.[12][13]
Post retirement
Post his retirement from the IAS, Das was appointed as a member of the 15th Finance Commission.[14][15][16][17] In addition, he was appointed as India's Sherpa to the G-20.[18][19][20]
