Hasmukh Adhia is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1981 batch belonging to Gujarat cadre.[2]

Education

Hasmukh Adhia is a PhD in yoga from Swami Vivekanand Yoga University in Bangalore,[3][2][4] and is a Gold medalist in one year post graduate programme in Public Management and Policy for Government and Non Government Exeuctives (PGP-PMP) from IIM Bangalore.[2][5][4] His thesis for PhD was on "Impact of Yoga on Management".[6] He also has M.Com and B.Com degrees from Gujarat University.[2][7][4]

Career

Hasmukh Adhia has served in various key positions for both Gujarat and Union government, such as Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), Principal Secretary (Education), Principal Secretary (Transport), Principal Secretary to Chief Minister of Gujarat, Executive Director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam, Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation (GIIC), and as the District Magistrate and Collector of Bhavnagar and Surat districts in Gujarat Government,[2] and as Union Revenue Secretary and Union Financial Services Secretary, in the Union Government.[2][4][8]

Adhia was also a Consultant to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).[2]

Financial Services Secretary

Hasmukh Adhia was appointed as the Union Financial Services Secretary by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in November 2014,[4][9][10] he assumed office on 3 November, and demitted it on 31 August 2015,[2] when he was appointed the Union Revenue Secretary.[2]

Revenue Secretary

Hasmukh Adhia was appointed as the Union Revenue Secretary by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in August 2015,[11][12][13] he assumed office on 1 September 2016.[2][8]

In September 2017, Adhia was designated as the Finance Secretary, after the retirement of Ashok Lavasa, as he became the senior-most Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.[14][15][16]

Controversies

Hasmukh Adhia is considered one of the key persons behind the Architecture and Roll out of the controversial Goods and Service Tax in India.[17] He is also considered to be privy to another major controversial move of Demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 Currency notes which forced the retirement of 86% of cash in circulation in India on 8 November 2016.[6][17][18]
