Rayamajhi (Nepali:रायमाझी) is an Ekthariya (single-clan) Chhetri surname. They belong to the Kashyap kaushik Gotra. Most of the people from this surname reside in Nepal. The Rayamajhis originate from the Palpa districts of Nepal and presently spread throughout Nepal and some cities in India like Dehradun, Lucknow, Delhi to name a few. Recently the Holy Rayamajhi "Kulpuja" was held in Baisakh 22nd 2075 B.S at Chhahara, Palpa district which lies approximately 25 km from Tansen, the capital city of Palpa.Also, in the 1st edition of Rayamajhi Banshawali Kitab it is stated that the people of this caste are the descendants of the Rajputs from a village in Rajistan. At the time when the Mughals were invading Rajisthan , these royal bloods decided to flee to Nepal and took upon two castes "Raya" and "Majhi" which together is called Rayamajhi.

History

Colonel Gambhir Singh Rayamajhi has been noted for his bravery and battle skills. "Capt Gambhir Singh Rayamajhi of the Devidutta Battalion of the Nepalese Army. He is standing holding a talwar in his right hand and a khukuri in his left hand surrounded by dead Indian Sepoy Mutineers. His weapons are preserved in one of the museums in Kathmandu."[1]
