Film career

Raavi Kondala Rao was born in a Telugu vaidiki-velanadu brahmin family at Saamarlakota in 1931. His father's name was Raavi Chitambaram. He was the fifth child among a family of eight children. One of his paternal great-grand father Raavi Kammanna was an astrologer in the court of Vizianagaram's famous Gajapathi Raju family. His ancestors on the paternal side hail near present-day Guntur area, who migrated to the Srikakulam district - Ichchapuram about 400 years ago. One of Kondala Rao's older brother - Raavi Kameswara Rau (RK Rau) - himself a renowned stage artist and English dramatist (who also acted during the black and white era in films like Aakasaraju and Pakkinti Ammayi) noticed Kondala Rao's keen interest in theater and films and promoted him.

Kondala Rao made his debut in film Tene Manasulu with Radha Kumari; they played on-screen wife and husband roles in over 100 films. As they didn't have any children, they adopted Radha Kumari's elder brother's son Sashikumar when he was aged 5.
