Politics of Karnataka

The Politics of Karnataka is represented by three major political parties, the Indian National Congress, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Janata Dal (Secular) and Indian National Congress led coalition government is in power in the state since May 2018. H.D. Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) is the current chief minister of Karnataka, he was elected on May 23, 2018.

In national politics

Karnataka consists of 28 parliamentary constituencies from which 28 members of parliament get elected to the Lok Sabha. Several politicians and bureaucrats from Karnataka have served at the center at various times in different capacities. Deve Gowda, who hails from Hassan served as the Prime minister of India in 1996. C.K. Jaffer Sharief from Bangalore is a veteran Congressman and 9-time MP and former Minister of Railways of Government of India.B. D. Jatti from Bijapur served as the Vice President and also as acting President in the past. S.Nigalingappa was Congress I president.

2004 state election

The last elections in Karnataka held in 2004 led to extremely unusual results. For one, no party had enough seats to form a government on its own. Out of a total of 224 seats, the BJP won 79, the Congres 65 and the JD (Secular) 58. The only possibility was a coalition government and the two largest parties were politically not inclined to form a coalition. JD(S) President and former prime minister Deve Gowda decided to partner with the Congress to form a government just to keep the BJP out of the government. The coalition headed by chief minister N Dharam Singh (Congress) and Deputy chief minister Siddharamiah (of JDS) lasted till 2006. Deve Gowda's son HD Kumaraswamy, also of the JDS, brought in a new twist when he garnered support of 46 other MLAs and withdrew support from the Congress. Kumaraswamy struck a deal with the opposition party, the right wing BJP, to form an alternate government. The new coalition had HD Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister and B. S. Yeddyurappa of the BJP as deputy chief minister. Before forming the government, the two parties had entered into an informal power sharing agreement. They would enjoy chief ministership for a period of 20 months each (which would cover the time left for the next elections). This has created a unique situation where a government has been headed by three different political parties with no elections between them.

2018 state election

The Karnataka Elections 2018 held on May 12, 2018, in all 222 of 224 constituencies of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.[1]. The term of the current 224-member legislative Assembly ends on May 28. The election result of the Karnataka this time turns out to be very exciting. BJP having a count of 104 seats, Congress having 78, JD(S) having count of 38 and others on 3. BJP misses out the majority by a very little count which have turn into a great burden to them.

The Congress high command knowing that BJP is a few seats short of the halfway mark saw an opportunity for a winning post poll alliance and gave unconditional support to the JDS. BJP was given the first chance to prove its majority on the house and got 15 days for the same. Petitioned by Congress against such controversial decision by the Governor in the Supreme court as there were chances of horse trading from BJP, B.S Yediyurappa was not stopped from swearing in as chief minister, but the time was cut short to 5 days.

Congress and JDS MLAs had to be safeguarded in various resorts in Bangalore, Kochi and thereafter shifted to Hyderabad with support of Chief minister of Telengana - KCR to prevent them from being poached by BJP led by B.S Yediyurappa. Still there were unsuccessful attempts by BJP as per media reports.

B.S Yediyurappa with such short time to prove majority said that a great mandate given by the people of Karnataka to BJP (104) seats did not suffice and resigned before trust vote. Which paved way for present chief minister of karnataka H. D. Kumaraswamy from JD(S). Then H. D. Kumaraswamy went on to waive of around 48 lakhs crore worth farmer loans which is first of its kind in indian history.

Civic organizations

There are several organizations like BPAC ( Bangalore Political Action Committee ) which help in the civic administration of Bangalore.[2] These organizations are formed by responsible citizens of India like Narayana Murthy (Founder of InfoSys), Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (Biocon), Ms. Nooraine Fazal (an educationist) etc. These organizations help in creating social awareness programs, forming transparency in governance, raise voice against corruption, funding for candidates and strive towards the welfare of Citizens.[3]
