Panthera leo melanochaita is a lion subspecies that occurs in East and Southern Africa.[1] It comprises the following populations:
- Cape lion (P. l. melanochaita) — inhabited South Africa's Cape Province until the mid-19th century.[2]
- East African lion, formerly P. l. massaicus (Neumann 1900) — ranges in East Africa.[1]
- Southern African lion, formerly P. l. bleyenberghi (Lönnberg 1914) — ranges in Southern Africa.[1]
