PPA, Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura (Offshore Multipurpose Patrol Ship) is a new Frigate class of the Italian Navy.[13]
It is planned to replace 2 Soldati class light patrol frigates, eight Minerva class corvettes, four Comandanti class patrol vessels, two Sirio class patrol vessels, and four Cassiopea class patrol vessels, between 2021/2035. With 2014 Naval Law, has been financed seven vessels with three more on option.[14][15]

Insistent rumors from February 2017 report the news that the Italian Navy has transformed the order for 3 PPA Light+, to 3 PPA Full, thus bringing the PPA funded to 5 PPA Full and 2 PPA Light.

According to RID, the Italian Navy ordered the new MBDA TESEO MK/2E heavy-duty missile (TESEO "EVO"), a long range anti-ship missile with also strategic land attack capability. The missile will have a new terminal "head" with dual RF seeker (Radio Frequency) and, presumably, date the need to even attack ground targets, IIR (Imaging IR). Compared to the predecessor OTOMAT/TESEO, the TESEO "EVO" MK/2E has a double range or more than 360 km. Former OTOMAT is accredited for a range of action of more than 180 km.[16][17][18]
