Biography

Child Star

His mother was a revue performer.[1] He made his stage debut at Coliseu do Porto at the age of three and began a successful career as a child singer in Portugal. Throughout his early years, Roque won several festivals and singing competitions, releasing his first album Brincar a Brincar in 1995. His main collaborator was producer Tony Lemos, a founding member of Eurodance Portuguese band Santamaria. Roque's repertoire was known for employing a variety of musical styles, most notably Pop.[2]

Theatre and Opera

In his teens, he studied theatre and film in Portugal (graduating from Academia Contêmporanea do Espectáculo - Escola de Artes), Brazil (where he was a student of Fábio Barreto and Augusto Boal at Casa de Artes das Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro) and France,[3] where he graduated from the famous École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, studying physical theatre and other major dramatic territories, such as melodrama, mime, tragedy, commedia dell'arte, clowning and buffon.[4]

In 2003, he made his theatre debut in a São João National Theatre's production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht. Roque's theatre credits include amongst others the first Portuguese production of The Laramie Project directed by Diogo Infante in 2005 playing Matthew Shepard's murderer Aaron McKinney, and C'était Marie-Antoinette in 2009, in which he appeared with actress Natacha Régnier at Festival de Radio France. Also in 2009, he appeared in Theatre du Chatelet's opera production of The Magic Flute and in Opéra National de Montpellier's production of Dido and Aeneas, playing The Sorceress.

In 2011, his performance as John Darling in Irina Brook's Peter Pan at Théâtre de Paris was praised by Le Figaro, France Inter and Financial Times.[5][6][7][8][9] In France, he has also performed in stage productions at Musée National d'Art Moderne, Le Corum, Opéra National de Montpellier and Opéra de Marseille.

Contemporary Art

On March 18, 2015, his work My Cake, was unveiled simultaneously in six European museums as part of Mons 2015 European Capital of Culture.[10] The art film was nominated for various art and music awards.[11] In January 2016, Nuno Roque appeared on the cover of Mexican magazine Ulisex! and was named one of the Top 15 people of the year, alongside President Barack Obama, Caitlyn Jenner and Pope Francis.[12] His artistic work mixes film, photography and sculpture. He works in Paris with his production team, La Mafia Dell'Arte, composed of artisans and technicians from different artistic disciplines and nationalities[13].

Cinema and Television

In April 2017, he hosted Le Gros Journal talk-show on Canal+, live from The Peninsula Paris palace with a segment entitled Le Coup d'un Soir avec Nuno Roque (One Night Stand with Nuno Roque). In 2018, he made his feature-film debut playing an autistic and illiterate 20-year-old in Gilles Legrand's Best Intentions, starring opposite Agnès Jaoui.[14] In 2017, Nuno Roque joined #RightsOutLoud, a global campaign by the United Nations to help promote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through multilingual videos, alongside figures such as António Guterres and Paulo Coelho. Roque recorded videos in English, Portuguese and French, reading several articles from the 1948 Declaration. These videos are intended for an educational platform that aims to broaden access to the Declaration to millions of illiterate and visually impaired.
