North Vista Secondary School (Abbreviation: NVSS; Chinese: 德新中学) is a co-educational government secondary school in Sengkang, Singapore. Founded in 1956 as Gan Eng Seng Government Chinese Middle school, North Vista had a rich heritage with its mission to offer secondary education for all.[1]
School History
Thomson Government Chinese Middle School
North Vista Secondary School was founded as Gan Eng Seng Government Chinese Middle school in 1956, as one of the Government Chinese Middle Schools set up to cater to Chinese school students who had their studies disrupted by the Chinese middle schools riots.[1][2][3] The school was renamed as Thomson Government Chinese Middle School, and subsequently as Thomson Secondary School with a merger with Thomson Vocational School in 1958.[2]
North Vista Secondary School
On 15 December 2000, the campus was relocated to Sengkang New Town. With the relocation, Thomson Secondary School was renamed as North Vista Secondary School, while retaining the native name "德新“, as a reflection of its rich heritage, as well as its mission to instil and inspire cultured and innovative youths of the society.[4]
50th Anniversary
North Vista Secondary School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2006. A 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner was held on 8 September 2006, with Mr Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence, as the Guest-of-Honour.[5]

Motto
Aptly described as an "Everlasting Vision", North Vista Secondary School's motto, "Viva la Vista"signifies having a vision to build on the rich heritage and look ahead into the future. The motto emphasises the importance of creating a school with a strong tradition in both character and achievements, will ensure a successful and everlasting journey into the new millennium.[6]

Academic information
Being a government secondary school, North Vista Secondary School offers three academic streams, namely the four-year Express course, as well as the Normal Course, comprising Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) academic tracks.
GCE O Level Express Course
The Express Course is a nationwide four-year programme that leads up to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination.[7]

- Subjects indicated with ' * ' are mandatory subjects.
- All students in Singapore are required to undertake a Mother Tongue Language as an examinable subject, as indicated by ' ^ '.
- "SPA" in Pure Science subjects refers to the incorporation of School-based Science Practical Assessment, which 20% of the subject result in the national examination are determined by school-based practical examinations, supervised by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board. The SPA Assessment has been replaced by one Practical Assessment in the 2018 O Levels.[9]

Normal Course
The Normal Course is a nationwide 4-year programme leading to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination, which runs either the Normal (Academic) curriculum or Normal (Technical) curriculum, abbreviated as N(A) and N(T) respectively.[10]
Normal (Academic) Course
In the Normal (Academic) course, students offer 5-8 subjects in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination.Compulsory subjects include:[11]
- English Language
- Mother Tongue Language
- Mathematics
- Combined Humanities
A 5th year leading to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination is available to N(A) students who perform well in their Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination. Students can move from one course to another based on their performance and the assessment of the school principal and teachers.[10]
Normal (Technical) Course
The Normal (Technical) course prepares students for a technical-vocational education at the Institute of Technical Education.[11] Students will offer 5-7 subjects in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level examination.[11] The curriculum is tailored towards strengthening students’ proficiency in English and Mathematics.[11] Students take English Language, Mathematics, Basic Mother Tongue and Computer Applications as compulsory subjects.[11]
