The National High School Musical Theatre Awards, more commonly known as the Jimmy Awards, is an awards ceremony that recognizes excellence of student performers representing various professional theatres in the United States.[2] Two awards are given each year, Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor. Winners are selected by a panel of industry experts. The program impacts over 100,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by forty professional theatres throughout the US.[3]
Over 40 programs across the nation send two students, a best actor and a best actress, to New York City in June each year. They spend a week rehearsing with Broadway professionals and putting together a full show.
History
The Jimmy Awards were found in 2009 by Van Kaplan of Pittsburgh CLO and Susan Lee of Nederlander Alliances.[4] They are named in honor of the late James M. Nederlander, a well-known live theatre owner, Broadway producer (earning him 11 Tony Awards), and former chairman of the Nederlander Organization.[2][5] The annual celebration is now held at the Minskoff Theatre.
