Nadeem Khateeb

Nadeem Khateeb (1 August 1967 - 21 February 1999) was a Kashmiri freedom fighter(Mujahid). He was born in Doda and became the first non-resident Kashmiri to have returned to Kashmir to join armed militancy. He was martrayed in Udhampur.[1]

Biography

Khateeb started his nursery schooling at St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Baramulla in 1971, during his Father’s posting as an Executive Engineer at Baramulla. In the year 1974 he was admitted to Tyndale Biscoe School[2], Srinagar where from he along with Ashfaq Majid Wani matriculated in 1983. He completed his Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in 1988 with Philosophy, Geography and Geology as his subjects. Later he took admission in Kashmir University in 1989 for Post Graduation (PG) degree in Geography as his favourite subject.

Khateeb trained as a commercial pilot at Karnal Aviation Club, Karnal, Haryana until July 1992. He moved to the United States in November 1992 and was admitted to a flying school in Georgia in January 1993. This flying school, namely, The South Eastern School Of Aeronautics located At Herbert Smart Downtown, MACON, Georgia, trained Khateeb for Commercial Pilot License after which he passed the necessary flying tests conducted by FAA . After obtaining this license, he joined the same school's staff as Flying Instructor. Khateeb after logging around 736 flying hours on various planes obtained Flight Radio Telephony Operator’s License from United Kingdom (U.K), Civil Aviation Authority.He also got his Boeing 737 rating from Business Air Corporate Aviation Flight School at Wiley Post Airport, Bethany, and Oklohama, U.S.A.[3]

Later he left his profession to join a militant group called,Al-Badr, for arms training in Kashmir, before crossing the Line of Control to Pakistan. Nadeem is believed to have fought in Afghanistan , Bosnia and Chechnya.

All the while his family thought he was working in U.S.A. On 27 February 1999, Khateeb's family received a phone call from London calming that Khateeb had died along with two other militants in Udhampur. On 21 February 1999 Nadeem had been killed at Buthal Village on the Gool Heights of Udhampur District.

After 13 days of his burial, his family rushed to Gool in order to exhume his body from the grave. His body was taken and buried at his ancestral graveyard at Rawalpora, Srinagar, Kashmir
