Miss Universe Malaysia is one of the biggest beauty pageants in Malaysia that sends the winner to the Miss Universe pageant. The pageant was established in 1964 and the original winner of Miss Malaysia Universe was Angela Filmer of Selangor even though Malaya has sent their first ever delegate in 1962 to Miss Universe and the pageant is considered the longest pageant in Malaysia.
The winner of Miss Universe Malaysia represents her country at the Miss Universe pageant. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify (due to age) for either contest, a runner-up is sent.
The Miss Universe Malaysia motto is HIP, Urban, Relevant and Real and Elaine Daly (Miss Malaysia Universe 2003) is the national director of Miss Universe Malaysia Organization since 2016 replacing the former president, Carey Ng who was resigned 2 days after the crowning moments of Kiran Jassal.
The current Miss Universe Malaysia is Jane Teoh of Penang who was crowned on January 11, 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.
History
Miss Malaysia represents Malaysia in the Big Four international beauty pageants to select Malaysian representatives at Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth. The winners of the national pageants are selected at different competitions as each is owned by a different organisation.
In 1960 until 1961, the Malaysian representatives for Miss International were chosen from closed election in that era until the Miss Malaysia pageant was established in 1963 where the winner will be sent to Miss Universe while the runners-up will go to Miss World and Miss International. The pageant was no longer exist until 1980 because all the three major titles has their own organisation. In 1960 until 1962, Miss Malaysia was wearing "Miss Malaya" sashes in Miss Universe and Miss International. Malaya also had sent delegates for Miss Universe 1957 until 1961 but they were not considered as the winner of Miss Malaysia and their identity remained unknown due to they were not competing in Miss Universe until in 1962, Malaya sent their official delegate for Miss Universe, she is Sarah AlHabshee Abdullah, Miss Malaya/Universe 1962. Malaysia had once withdrew at the Miss Universe 1963.
