Miriam Jane Alice "Mims" Davies[2] (born 2 June 1975) is a British Conservative Party politician and former Communications Officer who was first elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Eastleigh in May 2015.[3] She currently serves as an Assistant Government Whip and a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales.[1]

Career

Davies was born on the 2 June 1975. She was privately educated at the Royal Russell School in London and studied Politics and International Relations at Swansea University;[4] she was the first in her family to enter higher education.[5] She worked primarily as a local radio presenter, reporter and producer.[4] She later worked as a road safety communications officer with the Automobile Association, the police force and Sussex Safer Roads Partnership.[5]

Davies served for the Conservative Party as a town councillor and as a District councillor on Mid Sussex District Council for the Haywards Heath Lucastes ward from 2011 to 2015. Davies was initially coopted onto Hurstpierpoint and Sayers Common Parish Council which began her political involvement.

At the 2015 general election on 7 May, Davies was elected as MP for Eastleigh defeating Liberal Democrat incumbent Mike Thornton by over 9,000 votes. She was reelected in the 2017 general election, increasing her share of the vote by 8.2% and receiving over half of the total votes in the constituency;[6] the first majority vote in Eastleigh since the 1992 election.

In January 2016, Davies was one of 72 MPs who voted down an amendment in Parliament on rental homes being "fit for human habitation" who were themselves landlords who derived an income from a property.[7]

She was made Assistant Government Whip on the 9 January 2018 and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales on the 26 July 2018.[1]

In the House of Commons she sits on the Commons Reference Group on Representation and Inclusion and has previously sat on the Consolidation Bills (Joint Committee) and Women and Equalities Committee.[8]

Personal life

Davies has two children. She separated from Mark Davies in November 2015 and divorced him in September 2017. She is a keen runner and has completed several long distance races, including marathons.[4] Her ex-husband co-founded and co-runs the retail and commercial real estate NewRiver group of companies.[9] The group owns 29 shopping centres, over 200 pubs and other assets.[10][11]
