Mato Jajalo (Bosnian pronunciation: [mâːto jǎjalo]; born 25 May 1988) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Serie B club Palermo and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Jajalo started his professional career at Slaven Belupo, before joining Siena in 2009. In 2010 he had a loan spell with 1. FC Köln, and signed for them permanently the following year. Jajalo was loaned to Sarajevo in 2014 and switched to Rijeka later that year. He moved to Palermo in 2015.

A former Croatian youth international, Jajalo even made his senior international debut for Croatia, only to switch his allegiance to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016.

Club career

Early career

Due to the war in then SFR Yugoslavia, Jajalo's family fled to Germany in 1990 when he was just two years old. There he grew up in Offenbach and started playing football at local DJK Eiche Offenbach. When he was eleven years old, the family moved again, settling down close to Koprivnica in Croatia.[2] Jajalo rose through the ranks of Slaven Belupo and made his professional debut against Osijek in 2007.[3] He scored his first professional goal against Zagreb on 5 August 2007.[4]

On 1 June 2009, Jajalo was transferred to Siena for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of €2 million.[5]

In July 2010, Jajalo signed a one-year loan deal with 1. FC Köln, with an option to make the transfer permanent, that was activated the following year.[6] After falling out of favor at the club, in February 2014, Jajalo was loaned to Bosnian side Sarajevo for the remainder of season.[7]

In June 2014, Jajalo signed a two-year contract with Rijeka.[8] He was released by Rijeka on disciplinary grounds on 23 January 2015 as he escaped from the training camp on 12 January for unexplained reasons.[9]

Palermo

On 28 January 2015, Jajalo was signed by Serie A club Palermo on a free transfer. He signed a contract until June 2019.[10] Three days later, he made his competitive debut for the club in a narrow win against Hellas Verona.[11] On 24 May 2015 he scored his first goal for the team, in a 2–3 defeat to Fiorentina.[12]

In April 2017, Palermo was relegated to Serie B but Jajalo nevertheless decided to stay at the club.[13]

International career

Jajalo has represented Croatia on various youth levels and was a captain of the Croatia under-21. He made his senior international debut on 12 November 2014 in a friendly match against Argentina in London.[14]

However, in March 2016 Jajalo decided that in the future he would play for Bosnia and Herzegovina, his country of birth.[15] In July his application to change sports citizenship from Croatian to Bosnian was approved by FIFA.[16] He got his first call-up in September, for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and Cyprus,[17] Jajalo debuted in an away loss to Belgium on 7 October.[18]
