Van der Stoep returned to the Parliament in December 2011 because of seat increases provided for by the Treaty of Lisbon. As the first candidate on the Party for Freedom election list who did not have a seat in the European Parliament he was allowed to return to the Parliament. However, the Party for Freedom did not allow him to rejoin their delegation, and he currently sits as an independent.
