List of first women lawyers and judges in New Mexico

This is a list of the first women lawyer(s) and judge(s) in New Mexico. It includes the year in which the women were admitted to practice law (in parentheses). Also included are women who achieved other distinctions such becoming the first in their state to obtain a law degree or become a political figure

  • Henrietta Hume Pettijohn Buck (1892):[1][2] First woman admitted to practice law in New Mexico
  • Nellie C. Brewer Pierce (1908):[2] First woman to actually practice law in New Mexico
  • Mary Coon Walters (1962):[3][4] First female appointed as a district court judge (1972), as well as a Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court (1984)
  • Margaret Weldon Lamb (1969):[2] First female appointed as District Attorney in New Mexico (1978–1980)
  • Betty Ann Camunez (1972):[2] First Hispanic American female lawyer in New Mexico
  • Pamela B. Minzner (1972):[5] First female elected as the Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court (1999)
  • Patricia A. Madrid (1973):[2][6] First Mexican American female elected as the State Attorney General in New Mexico (1999). She was also the first woman elected as a judge of the Second Judicial District (1978). [Bernalillo County, New Mexico]
  • Petra F. Jimenez Maes (1973):[7] First Hispanic American female justice appointed as the Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court (2003)
  • M. Christina Armijo (1975):[8] First female appointed as a Judge of the New Mexico Court of Appeals (1996–2011)
  • Marie Roanhorse Neswood:[9] First female appointed as a Judge of the Navajo Nation Judicial Branch (1976–1989)
  • Carol Jean Vigil (c. 1977):[10] First Pueblo female lawyer in New Mexico. She was also the first Pueblo female appointed as a Judge of the First Judicial District (1998) in New Mexico.
  • Martha Vázquez (1978):[11] First female (and Latino American female) appointed as a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico (1993)
  • Susana Martinez (1986):[12] First Hispanic American female (a lawyer) to become the Governor of New Mexico (2011)
  • Mercedes C. Murphy:[13] First female Judge in the Seventh Judicial District (2014) [Catron County, Sierra County, Socorro County and Torrance County]
