Stranger Things is an American science fiction-horror web television series created for Netflix by the Duffer Brothers and features an ensemble cast. It is set in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s. The nearby Hawkins National Laboratory ostensibly performs scientific research for the United States Department of Energy, but secretly does experiments into the paranormal and supernatural, including those that involve human test subjects. Inadvertently, they have created a portal to an alternate dimension called "the Upside Down". The influence of the Upside Down starts to affect the unknowing residents of Hawkins in calamitous ways.[1][2] All episodes of the first season were released on Netflix on July 15, 2016,[3] while the second season was released in its entirety on October 27, 2017.[4]

The series has received critical acclaim and numerous accolades for its writing, acting, directing, production values, soundtrack, and visual effects. Stranger Things has been nominated for many awards, including 31 Primetime Emmy Awards (five wins), five Golden Globe Awards, two Grammy Awards, four Critics' Choice Television Awards (one win), four Saturn Awards (two wins), two Producers Guild of America Awards (one win), three Writers Guild of America Awards and a Peabody Award nomination. It was also selected by the American Film Institute as one of its Top 10 television programs of the year for the series' two seasons.

The main cast has been nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series nominations, winning in 2017. Millie Bobby Brown is the most nominated member of the cast, including being honored with nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Cast member David Harbour also received nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards and one Screen Actors Guild Award, in addition to a Golden Globe Award nomination, while Winona Ryder was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Notes

  1. Certain award groups do not simply award one winner. They recognize several different recipients, have runners-up and have third place. Since this is a specific recognition and is different from losing an award, runner-up mentions are considered wins in this award tally. Awards in certain categories do not have prior nominations and only winners are announced by the jury. For simplification and to avoid errors, each award in this list has been presumed to have had a prior nomination.
  2. Tied with American Gods
  3. Tied with Game of Thrones
  4. Tied with Marvel's Luke Cage
