The Real Housewives is an American media franchise that consists of several reality television series broadcast on the Bravo cable network. Each series follows an affluent group of women as they socialize and cope with life's struggles.[1] The franchise initially began in 2006 with the series of The Real Housewives of Orange County that featured Kimberly Bryant, Jo De La Rosa, Vicki Gunvalson, Jeana Keough and Lauri Waring.[2] Since the premiere of the series, it has grown to include multiple series in different cities and areas across the United States that include: New York City and Atlanta in 2008;[3][4] New Jersey in 2009;[5] Washington, D.C.[6] and Beverly Hills in 2010;[7] Miami in 2011;[8] Potomac and Dallas in 2016.[9][10] The franchise has grown to be successful with several housewives receiving spin-offs of their respective series.

Original cast members that have starred on every season of their respective series include Gunvalson in Orange County,[11] Ramona Singer in New York City,[12] Teresa Giudice in New Jersey,[13] and Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump in Beverly Hills.[14] Original cast members that have starred on the current or most recently aired season of their respective series after at least one season of absence or reduced capacity include Luann de Lesseps and Bethenny Frankel in New York City and NeNe Leakes and Shereé Whitfield in Atlanta.[15] The Real Housewives of D.C. and The Real Housewives of Miami have since been cancelled.[16][17] Through the upcoming thirteenth season of The Real Housewives of Orange County, a total of 110 housewives have been featured across the U.S. installments.

The domestic franchise has inspired many multiple series across the world as international installments. The first of the international installment was The Real Housewives of Athens which premiered in 2011.[18] Since the premiere of the series focused in Athens it has gown to include multiple series in different cities around the world that include; Vancouver in 2012;[19] Los Angeles (a French series) in 2013;[20] Melbourne in 2014;[21] Cheshire in 2015;[22] Auckland in 2016;[23] Sydney, Toronto and Hungary in 2017; South Africa in 2018.[24][25] Since the premiere of the international series, the shows based in Athens and Vancouver as well as Les Vrais Housewives have ended. As of August 16, 2018, a total of 86 housewives have been featured across the international installments.
