List of animated works with LGBT characters

This is a list of animation works with LGBTQ+ characters. This list includes gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender fictional characters in animated feature films, animated shows, and anime.

History

Harry Benshoff and Sean Griffin write that animation has always "hint[ed] at the performative nature of gender" such as when Bugs Bunny puts on a wig and a dress, he is a rabbit in drag as a human male who is in drag as a female.[1]

Within the Japanese anime and manga, yaoi is the tradition of representing same-sex male relationships in materials that are generally created by women artists and marketed mostly for Japanese girls[2] while the genre known as yuri focuses on relationships between women.

Some LGBT characters in animation are derived from comics and video games. See also List of graphic art works with LGBT characters and List of video games with LGBT characters.

2007–2011 Kodomo no Jikan Kuro Kagami Lesbian Initially, Kuro's "friendship" with Rin was rather warped, as she viewed the latter as little more than her personal plaything, applying things such as makeup and nail polish to her as if she were a living doll (and getting into trouble for it). However, it was during an attempted "dress up" session that Kuro had her arguably greatest impact on her friend's life: her attempt to remove a dress that Aki had made by hand for Rin prompted the latter to emerge from her stupor for the first time to protest the action, marking the beginning of her long journey on the road to eventual recovery. While Kuro's attitude improved somewhat in the ensuing years, her friendship with Rin changed dramatically: the admiration and respect she developed for the strength of character that emerged in her friend eventually gave rise to an intimate attraction. In spite of this, she remains fiercely loyal and protective of Rin, a courtesy she extends to any individuals she considers her friends.[87] Her mother divorced her father after he cheated on her. This is the reason for Kuro's general distrust of men.[88]

When Kuro asked Shirai what the best approach for dealing with her unrequited love for Rin would be, Shirai hurt the young girl's feelings by unintentionally implying that her lesbian attraction was somehow less than normal. She apologized to her later on.

Tomo then starts to have doubts and regrets about her confession to Ai and hence, tries to inform Ai otherwise. However, Ai refrains her from doing so and states that she should give her some time to think and that no matter who confesses to her, she would still feel the same way. As the train passes by, Tomo expresses her love for her once again much to Ai's embarrassment. Japan

2018 Happy Sugar Life Satō Matsuzaka, Shio Kōbe Bisexual or Pansexual + Probably Lesbian or Bisexual Satō is depicted as a person who has no prejudices in sexual preferences, and her only canonical love interest is the girl Shio. And although the sexual part of their relationship is still questionable, the manga repeatedly emphasizes the romantic basis of Sato's feelings. At the same time, the nature of Shio's feelings remains partially ambiguous, so the director of the show, in his own words, considered their relationship more family than romantic, although he didn't rule out the presence of both elements in their feelings. The anime ending also contains a possible hint that Shio could adopt Sato’s way of life and her view on love. Japan

Notes

  1. In the Brazilian Portuguese dub by Dublavideo, the scene where Hyō claims to be Bucky's lover was censored. In this dub, Hyō claims to be Bucky's friend.
  2. In Portuguese, "Zezé" is a reduplication of "Zé", a familiar form of "José", which is equivalent to English "Joseph", and "Maria" is equivalent to English "Mary". "Zezé Maria" is a normal masculine name, as it is not unknown for men in Portuguese-speaking countries to be called José Maria or Zé Maria. However, José is a masculine name and Maria is a feminine name, hinting at the character's gender ambiguity.
  3. In Portuguese, Zezé Maria is referred to by pronouns ele ("he") and ela ("she"), as well as articles o (masculine "the") and a (feminine "the").
