Devilman Crybaby (stylized as DEVILMAN crybaby) is a Japanese anime series based on Go Nagai's manga Devilman. It was directed by Masaaki Yuasa and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, and premiered on January 5, 2018, available for worldwide streaming on Netflix as an original series.

Plot

In the series, Akira Fudo is informed by his best friend, Ryo Asuka, that an ancient race of demons has returned to take back the world from humans. Believing that the only way to defeat the demons is to incorporate their powers, Ryo suggests to Akira that he unite with a demon. Succeeding in doing so, Akira transforms into Devilman, possessing the powers of a demon but retaining the soul of a human.

The series is more of a direct anime adaptation of its source material than previous works, covering the entire span of the manga. However, many alterations were made to the plot, such as a modern setting, the addition of original characters, and different characterizations.

Akira Fudo (不動明)

The main protagonist of the series, Akira is a kind and overly sensitive young man who is prone to crying when seeing others in pain. After reuniting with his childhood friend Ryo, he becomes Devilman after the demon Amon fails to possess his body, giving Akira full control over his power as the titular Devilman. Akira's transition caused him to adopt some traits of Amon's personality, the demon's courage, cunning, and arrogance while retaining his empathy. Despite initially working with Ryo to stop the demons, Akira eventually finds himself betrayed with his exposure causing the deaths of his friends at the hands of a xenophobic mob. It was only after learning Ryo's true identity and plan that Akira ended their friendship and went to war with Satan in an attempt to save humanity, only to be killed in the final battle.
Ryo Asuka (飛鳥了)

A child prodigy and Akira's best friend, Ryo recruits Akira to his cause of exposing the existence of demons to the world. Cold and calculating, Ryo will do whatever he feels is necessary to accomplish his goals while also protecting Akira's secret. He is later revealed to be the reincarnation of the series antagonist Satan, explaining his intention to wipe out humanity and defeat God while claiming that he made Akira a Devilman so they can live in the new world together. After Akira ends their friendship, Ryo leads the genocide of humanity and easily overpowers both the forces of mankind and the Devilman army. Ryo eventually kills Akira, admitting his feelings for Akira before realizing what he had done and mourns his friend as the angels descend to initiate a time loop that will result in everything being reset and repeated.
Miki Makimura (牧村美樹)

A popular track star and Akira's childhood friend and crush, Miki is a kindhearted girl who cares for Akira. She displays a strong and independent attitude and is not afraid to speak her mind. Unlike previous versions of the character, Miki and her younger brother are half-Japanese on their mother's side and half-French American on their father's.
Miki "Miko" Kuroda (ミーコ/黒田ミキ)

A childhood friend of Akira and Miki, Miko has repressed feelings of anger and jealousy towards Miki due to their long history of doing a track together. These feelings eventually allow her to remain herself after being possessed by a spider demon following a rave, becoming a Devilman. As a Devilman, Miko became self-confident enough to freely speak out her mind as she openly resented Miki in front of her friends. She eventually joins Akira and Koda after finding the latter hiding out near the stadium. She later saves Akira's life after Koda's betrayal and is asked to look after everyone in the Makimura's home following Ryo's betrayal. After an insane mob attacks them, Miki and Miko attempt to escape in the cover of darkness but are spotted by a group of armed men who open fire of them. Badly injured by gunfire, Miko commits suicide while trying to buy time for Miki to escape. Her Devilman transformation resembles that of a Black Widow Spider.
Silene (シレーヌ, Shirēnu)

A lover of Amon and one of Satan's feared warriors, Silene is a harpy-like demon who seeks vengeance against Akira for subverting Amon's consciousness while attempting to seduce the former in hopes of reviving Amon.
Kaim (カイム, Kaimu)
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama[2] (Japanese); Joe Ochman[3] (English)
Silene's partner and a fellow demon, Kaim investigates Amon's disappearance and learns of Akira's power. He is in love with Silene and is not afraid to share these feelings towards her, though she mainly dismisses them. Unlike most of the demons in Satan's army, Kaim is calm and patient in most situations and looks down upon other demons for their lack of control and insatiable bloodlust.
Jinmen (ジンメン)
Voiced by: Akio Hirose[2] (Japanese); Michael Sorich[3] (English)
A large sadistic turtle demon that incorporates the souls and faces of whoever he devours onto his shell, Jinmen stalks Akira's mother back home to Japan and murders her, devouring her and adding her to his shell. Unlike previous portrayals of the character, he possesses Akira's father and slaughters a bus full of people rather than a train.
Xenon (ゼノン, Zenon)
Voiced by: Avu-chan (Queen Bee)[2]
A giant, three-faced demon general and Satan's second in command alongside Psycho Jenny, who leads the attack in Japan. He is one the of few demons who can overpower Akira and attempted to have Ryo killed.
Psycho Jenny (サイコジェニー, Saiko Jenī)
Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato (Japanese); Cindy Robinson (English)
A demon shaped like a grinning woman's head with comparatively tiny arms and legs, Jenny possesses psychic powers that allowed her to be fully aware of the world's looped timeline. Jenny initially assumed human form to pose as Ryo's guardian and secretary until he was ready to fully awaken as Satan, using her powers to complete the transition. Jenny remains by Ryo's side until she was killed by humans when they developed the means to shield themselves from her psychic powers.
Koji Nagasaki (長崎光司)
Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda[2] (Japanese); Doug Erholtz[3] (English)
A sleazy journalist who lures high school girls to swimsuit photoshoots to make a living. He hopes to use Miki in his latest shoot though is sidelined by either her or Akira at every opportunity. After witnessing Akira transform into Devilman, he becomes determined to release the footage to the public before being murdered by Ryo after a demon attack.
Wamu (ワム)
Voiced by: Ken the 390[2] (Japanese); Johnny Yong Bosch[3] (English)
A rapper and gang leader who has feelings for Miki, and was initially Akira's rival before the two come to respect one another. He and Gabi are the only gang members to remain by Miki's side as they are attacked by the mob, with Wamu fending them off with a machine gun to buy Miki and Miko enough time to escape before being stabbed to death with a pickaxe.
Gabi (ガビ)
Voiced by: Subaru Kimura[2] (Japanese); Ben Pronsky[4] (English)
A member of Wam's gang, Gabi is a headstrong young man who is not afraid of confrontation. Gabi is the only gang member to assist Wamu in defending the Makimura home as it is besieged by a paranoid mob and is stabbed to death by the mob after initially being stabbed by fellow gang member Babo.
Mayuta "Kukun" (ククン/マユタ)
Voiced by: Young Dais[2] (Japanese); Keith Silverstein[4] (English)
A member of Wamu's gang, he takes an interest in Miko Kuroda and the two start dating; however, he is killed when she becomes a Devilman.
Babo (バボ)
Voiced by: Hannya[2]
A member of Wamu's gang, Babo is often seen with the gang but never speaks unless it is to rap. He ultimately betrays the gang after he and Hie lead a paranoid Mob to the Makimura residence after learning Akira is a Devilman. He stabs Gabi after the later lets his guard down and looks in silence as Gabi is repeatedly stabbed to death by the mob. He is last seen parading around the Makimura house with the rest of the mob with the dismembered body parts of his friends until Akira incinerates them for murdering Miki.
Hie (ヒエ)
Voiced by: Afra[2]
A member of Wamu's gang, his long hair often covers his eyes and he never speaks. He is shown to initially loyal to Wamu and is friends and was not afraid to stand up to anyone who threatened them. He along with Babo betrays the gang and lead an insane mob to Miki's house. He partakes in the hunt for Miki and Miko after their escape. He attempts to execute Miko until she takes his weapon and eventually kills herself in an attempt to buy Miki time to escape. He is last seen parading around the burning home before being incinerated by Akira.
Moyuru Koda (幸田 燃寛)
Voiced by: Junya Hirano[2] (Japanese); Bryce Papenbrook[4] (English)
A gay national track star and Devilman who is saved by Akira, only to eventually join the demons and ends up being killed by Akira.
Taro Makimura (牧村太郎)
Voiced by: Eri Inagawa[2] (Japanese); Dorothy Elias-Fahn[4] (English)
Miki's younger brother who is obsessed with the 1972 Devilman series, but ultimately becomes a demon himself and has killed his mother by the time the boy's father Noel found them. Taro ends up being gunned down by soldiers despite Noel's attempts to convince the soldiers to spare him.
Noel Makimura (牧村ノエル)
Voiced by: Masato Obara[2] (Japanese); Christopher Corey Smith[4] (English)
Miki's father, who is French American. Noel is a kind man who considers Akira a member of his family due to his parents' absence. After his wife Akiko discovers her son is a demon and tells Noel she is leaving the city to protect him, Noel goes out in search of them. He eventually discovers Taro devouring Akiko and considers killing him but ultimately relents, ending up being gunned down by soldiers while pleading with them to spare his son.
Akiko Makimura (牧村亜樹子)

Miki's mother, who discovers that Taro is a demon and ends up being killed by him.
Tako (たこ)
The Makimura Family's pet black cat. Tako is possessed by a demon towards the end of the series, but manages to overpower it and becomes a Feline Devilman, dubbed 'Devilcat', a form he reveals after the mob attempts to kill him. As Devilcat, Tako gains the ability to use a glowing orb on his tail to blind opponents but ultimately dies after being hit by Satan's telepathic blades.

Production and release

Devilman Crybaby was first announced in March 2017. In August, it was revealed that the anime would have ten episodes.[5] It premiered on January 5, 2018 on Netflix. Masaaki Yuasa directed the anime, with Ichirō Ōkouchi writing the script and Eunyoung Choi serving as animation producer.[6]

Akira Fudo is a Japanese high school student who is often looked down upon by his peers for his poor performance in track and for overly sympathetic nature towards others pain. his only friend is his longtime crush Miki Makimura, living with her family as his parents are traveling doctors. One day while walking home from school, Akira is confronted by a local gang led by rapper Wamu until he is rescued by his childhood friend Ryo Asuka, a child prodigy and American university professor, who uses a machine gun to ward the gang members away. Ryo reveals to Akira that his recent expedition to the Amazon rainforest revealed the existence of a race of polymorphic creatures that evolve and adapt via the assimilation of other lifeforms: Demons. Ryo first encountered a demon that possessed the body of his Russian colleague Dr. Fikira, forced to defensively shoot Fikira at point blank range with the man regaining enough of his lucidity to commit suicide by immolation. Ryo explains that similar events have transpired worldwide and that the world governments are keeping it from the public. Wanting Akira's help to expose the demons' existence, Ryo takes them to a hedonistic rave called Sabbath where he suspects demons will be lurking. Akira, inadvertently drugged and believing them to merely be looking for demons, is horrified when Ryo begins slashing at people in hopes that the spilled blood will attract the demons. The violence does indeed stimulate demonic possession with the demons slaughtering the remaining humans while Ryo captures the massacre on camera. But Ryo gets injured while witnessing a powerful demon named Amon devour Akira to possess him. But Akira manages to gain the upper hand of the possession while going on rampage as Ryo realizes that his friend has become the most powerful demon of them all.

Akira has become a completely different man -- he's stronger, faster, and more popular than ever, but doesn’t remember how he changed. While walking home with Miki, Akira returns to the docks and confronts Wamu and his gang to recover Miki’s lost bag. Though he easily overpower them with his newfound strength, Akira begins to suffer flashbacks of the previous night and seeks out Ryo after remembering he was injured. Finding Ryo at his penthouse, Akira learns that he retained his conscious mind though he gained traces of Amon's personality and power which makes him neither human or demon. Ryo dubs Akira's condition as Devilman, though Akira requests Ryo to kill him should he lose control before returning home. The next day Akira discovers Miki secretly talking to a sleazy modeling agent Nagasaki and cuts their call short before telling her that the man is taking advantage of her. Later, Akira and Ryo go in search of Demons so that Ryo can film Akira fighting them while in Devilman form. While Akira is able to kill all the demons, Nagasaki, who is also a struggling journalist, has secretly filmed Akira's transformation with the intent of releasing it to the public.

After getting shut down by his editor in an attempt to sell the footage of Akira's transformation into Devilman, a desperate Nagasaki decides to get Miki to do the photoshoot he had planned. Akira and Ryo find Nagasaki’s address to find and destroy the footage, learning that Nagasaki still lives with his mother as Ryo pays her to cover any damages he and Akira cause during their search. Silene and Kaim, associates of Amon, learns of Akira's transition and plot to reawaken Amon so he can subvert his host. Miki secretly sneaks out of the house to meet Nagasaki for the photoshoot, but she soon begins to have second thoughts and attempts to leave. The demons soon arrive, where one of them possesses Miki’s body as a way to lure in Akira. Akira and Ryo soon arrive to find Nagasaki unconscious and Miki acting strangely. Deducing that she is possessed, Akira manages to remove and kill the demon inside of her while Ryo kills the rest of the demons. Ryo then murders Nagasaki while reveals that he had planted a bomb in Nagasaki’s home, killing his mother. When Ryo tries to convince him that Miki cannot be trusted, Akira refuses to let him harm her with their resulting standoff cut short by a sudden phone call.

Akira's mother calls and says she'll be home soon. Ryo warns Akira not to trust any human, but assures him that he will not kill Miki. The next day, Miki vaguely recalls Akira saving her the other night, though Akira assures her that she only imagined it. Akira's mother soon arrives in Japan hoping to see Akira. Akira's father, who is now a demon, slaughters everyone on an airport bus before killing his wife. Akira and Ryo head to the airport to meet her and follow her cell phone signal to an empty hangar. Though Akira is able to see his mother's face, she warns him to stay away since she has already died. It is then revealed that Akira’s father has been possessed by the large turtle-like demon Jinmen, who uses the faces of his victims to antagonize Akira. Noticing his father trying to suppress Jinmen’s influence, Akira tries to get through to him until Jinmen severs the top half of his own head to silence Akira's father. Ryo soon opens fire on Jinmen while trying to convince Akira that his parents are dead and that he must kill him. Akira eventually brings himself to kill Jinmen after his mother assures him that it's okay. The loss of both of his parents causes Akira to break down in agony.

Akira begins to suffer from deep sexual frustrations due to his attraction to Miki. After fantasizing about having sexual intercourse with Miki, Akira wanders into the night and eventually finds himself surrounded by working girls. Akira is soon seduced by Silene, who disguises herself as a working girl and offers him sex for no charge. While Akira accepts her offer, he quickly becomes wary when she asks him for his name as his refusal to answer provokes her into assuming her true form. While Silene attempts to reawaken Amon, Akira remained the dominant persona as he assumes his Devilman form while dominating Silene both combat and sex. But Kaim soon intervenes and, having feelings for her, decapitates himself so Silene can fuse onto his headless body to continue fighting. Silene nearly kills Akira until the merging drives her mad and she flees, Ryo finding Akira wounded and helps him outside where they find that Silene had died thinking she had won. Akira then ponders if the demons are truly capable of love.

Famous trackstar Moyuru Koda has sex with another man before transforming into a Devilman and consumes him. Akira and Ryo come to suspect Koda after learning that Koda’s boyfriend had died under similar circumstances. Ryo plans to expose Koda as a Devilman at an upcoming unisex track meet, though Akira is skeptical of the plan since he fears Koda may transform if exposed. Akira attempts to share his identity with Koda at the track meet, but is unaware that Ryo had drugged Koda's water to cause him to involuntarily transform in public and wreak havoc in the stadium. Akira manages to help Koda escape against Ryo’s advice.
7"Weak Humans, Wise Demons"Ayataka TanemuraIchirō ŌkouchiJanuary 5, 2018 (2018-01-05)
Koda, now a fugitive, takes refuge near the stadium with Akira to keep him company. Akira attempts to convince Koda that they should work together to find other Devilmen unaffiliated with the Demons, though Koda insists of not getting involved. They are soon joined by Miko Kuroda, another Devilman and a friend of Akira’s. When humanity begins turning on itself after the demons openly declared war, disgusted by the events and how Ryo apathetic caused it, Akira autonomously begins trying to rescue demons while attempting to convince them to become Devilmen with no success. Mrs. Makimura soon discovers that Taro is a demon and flees by car to protect him, leaving her husband a farewell text. Wamu and his gang take refuge at the Makimura residence with Miki and her father to avoid the growing chaos ravaging the city. Mr. Makimura soon goes out to search for his wife and son while making Akira vow to protect Miki in his absence. At the same time, the United States sends a Navy fleet towards Russia after believing they caused the demons. A group of disguised demons attempt to nuke Russia, but are consumed by a spherical light that encompasses a massive section of the planet.

Needing answers to his own actions and motives, Ryo returns to the Amazon rainforest again to uncover more about himself and the true nature of his past before his guardian reveals her true nature as a demon to awaken his true self. Back in Japan, Miki's father Noel searches for his missing wife and son, coming across extremely troubled and paranoid people and a police force who come close to killing him within the city. Eventually pinging Taro's phone location thanks to the help of Akira via Ryo, Noel finds the demonically possessed Taro eating his mother's corpse.

While intending to kill his son, Noel ultimately relents and attempts to protect Taro from the military before they are gunned down. Akira finds the family and carries them off to bury on a hill outside of the city before being overpowered in an ambush by a demon general by the name of Zennon. Akira is saved by the intervention of the demoness Psycho Jenny. As Miko gets him to safety, Jenny exposes Koda from his hiding place as he aligns himself with the demons. Akira and Miko soon return to Miki's house to inform her of the unsettling news of her family's deaths, with Akira empathic to Miki's sadness. Later, Ryo calls on an emergency broadcast across the world to inform everyone on the origin of demons and how they are created. As Akira watches, Ryo addresses to the world that demons are formed as a result of someone who is dissatisfied with society, and that anyone acting even slightly different could be a possible demon. He then shows incriminating footage of Akira transforming into his Devilman form to the world, with Akira being appalled by Ryo's sudden betrayal and lie to humanity.

Betrayed and exposed by Ryo’s broadcast, Akira becomes a target. Though Wamu and his gang draw their weapons on him, they soon relent and request he leaves. While Wamu and fellow gang member Gabi choose to stay and to look after Miki with Miko, the other two gang members Hie and Babo betray them by leading an insane mob to the Makimura residence. The mob, who believe that they are demons in disguise, set Miki's home on fire while killing Wamu and Gabi. Miko sacrifices herself to hold off the mob in her Devilman form while Miki escapes on foot, only for her to be caught and stabbed to death. Meanwhile, while searching for Ryo, Akira finds himself protecting innocent people from being stoned by a mob who he convinces to stop before watching them be slaughtered by Koba and accompanying demons. Escaping Koba, Akira decides to return to the Makimura residence while realizing his feelings for Miki, only to find the mob parading around the burning house with his friends' dismembered bodies. Akira mentally breaks down as he sees Miki's head on a pike. Horrified and enraged of their gleeful savagery, Akira denounces the mob as the real demons before incinerating them all. In a post-credits scene, a dream-like sequence shows Akira riding his motorcycle with Miki lovingly having her arms wrapped around him.

A broken Akira confronts Ryo on the cliffs they played on as children, carrying Miki’s severed head with him while demanding to know why Ryo betrayed him and his own kind. Ryo reveals his true identity as the fallen angel Satan, who fled to Earth after being exiled for defying God where he discovered the demons and grew to approve of their simple and competitive nature to weed out any weakness. But Satan and the demons were all wiped out when God's angels descended on Earth and devastated the planet, their souls enduring their physical destruction as they eventually regain their strength and corporeal forms in the present. Having reincarnated as Ryo and gradually regaining his memories through Psycho Jenny, Satan explains the apocalypse he caused is meant to exterminate the human population for defiling the world before turning his attention to God. Satan also reveals that he orchestrated Akira's transition into a Devilman to survive in the new world as his way of thanking him for being by his side when he was human. But an infuriated Akira refuses to join Satan's cause and ends their friendship, vowing to kill him with his own army of Devilmen the next time they meet. Akira returns to the Makimura family's burial site and lays Miki and their friends to rest before gathering the other Devilmen to fight Satan’s army after the resulting nuclear holocaust runs its course, defending the final bastion of humanity on Earth from the demons. In midst of the slaughter, after killing Koda for his betrayal, Akira battles Satan across the planet. Even after the other Devilmen sacrifice themselves to give Akira more power, Satan ultimately cleaves off Akira's lower half. His side victorious as he and Akira stare at the stars, Satan confesses his love for Akira before realizing his attack had instantly killed him. Satan is utterly devastated that he murdered his friend and cradles his body as the angels descend and once more ravage the earth, leaving it a crumbling cold second moon that now orbits a new Earth that God created.

Reception

Devilman Crybaby has received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences. The series received 80% on Rotten Tomatoes from 5 critics.[7]

Allegra Frank of Polygon referred to the series as Netflix's first anime masterpiece, praising the visuals, tone and use of humor through the show writing, "It’s a peak example of director Yuasa’s brand of balancing surrealist art and a real love for young people. The combination makes the show much easier to consume, and every tonal change stands out the more so for it. There’s something striking about an anime that can toe this fine line with such seeming ease."[8] Eric Thurm of Decider magazine gave the series a more lukewarm review, describing it as the "grossest show on TV", but still recommended that readers at least watch a couple of episodes for Yuasa's unique art style.[9]

The Japan Times contributing writer Matt Schley gave the series four stars out of a possible five writing, "The 10-episode “Crybaby” starts off strong and ends with a bang, but sags a bit in the middle, and the series’ ambition occasionally exceeds its production values — and there’s some pretty cringe-worthy English voice acting in the Japanese-language version. But if “Crybaby” presages what’s to come from Netflix’s investment in anime, it’s going to be an interesting year for the medium."[10]

Rob Salkowitz of Forbes wrote a very positive review of the anime stating, "If you can stomach the extreme visuals and neck-snapping tonal shifts, Devilman Crybaby will leave fans of contemporary adult-oriented animation wondering what the hell they just saw, mostly in a good way. If not, it’s a binge that will leave you wanting to purge."[11]

Mike Toole of Anime News Network reviewed the series giving both the sub and dubbed version a rating of B+ praising the animation style and the unique way the classic characters are presented, but criticized the series for losing much of its story structure in the middle of the series. In the review Toole writes, "DEVILMAN crybaby is both a thorough depiction of Go Nagai's dark, violent story and a fresh angle at the same time—purists might complain that the geniuses at Science SARU get too creative and goofy with the classic look of Nagai's blocky and muscular characters, but the remarkably creative visuals will keep your interest any time the story starts to waver."[12]
