Ko Samui (Thai: เกาะสมุย, Thai pronunciation: [kɔ̀ʔ sā.mūj]) officially City of Ko Samui (Thai: เทศบาลนครเกาะสมุย, Thai pronunciation: [tʰêːt.sā.bāːn ná(ʔ).kʰɔ̄ːn kɔ̀ʔ sā.mūj], RTGS: Thetsaban Nakhon Ko Samui) is a city (Thesaban nakhon) in Surat Thani, Southern Thai, Thailand.

History

The first local government on Samui island was established in 1956 with the sanitary district Ko Samui, which however only covered the area around the Nathon settlement.[2] In 1963 it was enlarged to cover the whole Samui island and Pha-Nga island, which at that time were still in the same district.[3] In 1973 it the area of the Ko Pha-Ngan district became a separate sanitary district.[4] Since 1981, the sanitary district covers the area of the whole district.[5]

Like all sanitary district, Ko Samui became a subdistrict municipality (Thesaban Tambon) in 1999.[6] In 2008, the subdistrict municipality was upgraded to a town municipality (Thesaban Mueang),[7] and in 2012, the town was upgraded to a city municipality.[8]

The conversion of the municipality into a special administrative area with an even greater self-governance similar to Pattaya was in discussion since 2008, but as of 2018 this wasn't done yet.

Administration

The municipality covers the same area as the district Ko Samui, which includes several smaller islands, most of them within the Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park and the main Samui island itself.
