Kento Yamazaki (山﨑 賢人, Yamazaki Kento, born September 7, 1994 in Itabashi, Tokyo) is a Japanese actor and model.[1][2] Best known for playing L in television series Death Note (2015), as well as starring in films L DK (2014), Heroine Shikkaku (2015) and Orange (2015). He is under the Japanese talent Agency Stardust Promotion.[3]

Early Life

Kento Yamazaki was born in Tokyo, from a middle class family. He lives with his father, mother and older brother. As a child, Kento is an agile kid and love eating. Eventhough his body was thin, he admitted that he is a big eater. He also revealed several times in public that he loved playing soccer and is really good at it. He claimed in interviews that as a child he dreamed of being a soccer player, and if he did not become an actor he will become a professional soccer player or coach of the national team.[4] The first modelling offered came during the third year of his junior high school when he was scouted by his current agency at Takeshita Dori (Harajuku) while on his way home after a soccer match.[5] Worked as a model for magazine “Pichi Lemon” from 2009 to 2011, before entering acting world.[6]

Career

Kento debuted as an actor in 2010 when he was cast in TV series Atami no Sousakan as a mysterious high school student. That was followed by a supporting role in TV series Clone Baby as a hacker.

Kento's first movie is Control Tower which was released in April 2011.[7] He sang and played guitar in this movie, as well as his acting received positive feedback. Later on, he appeared in The Wings of the Kirin (2012) and cast as lead in 2012 horror thriller film Another, with Ai Hashimoto for the second time after in Control Tower. Then he appeared in films, The Chasing World 3[8] and Live action of Love for Beginners. In 2013, he only took a supporting role in film JINX!!! and TV series 35-sai no Koukousei. He starred for the film based on a highly successful manga L DK in 2014 as the leading role opposite Ayame Goriki.[9] The film was a breakthrough in his career which made Kento increasingly known to the public. He gets many other major roles after starring in L-DK. Besides films he played different roles in three drama series, one of them is Baseball Brainiacs along with actor Sota Fukushi and Yuto Nakajima.[10] Same year, Kento also make his stage debut as main lead Inuzuka Shino for Satomi Hakkenden. In 2015, he casted again in film based on popular manga adaptation titled Heroine Shikkaku alongside Mirei Kiritani.[11] He also got the leading role in Orange opposite with Tao Tsuchiya.[12] This film is a critical and commercial success,[13] grossed almost 28 million USD and become the 9th-highest-grossing Japanese films of 2016.[14][15] From those two films, he won the 39th Japan Academy Prize for Newcomers of the Year and nominated at the 2016 Hochi Film Awards. Still at the same year, he appeared in the television adaptation of a famous manga Death Note as L and NHK Asadora Mare

In 2016 Kento was casted for Your Lie in April where he play role of Kosei Arima a gifted pianist, alongside Suzu Hirose as Kaori Miyazono.[16] For the role as a pianist, Kento learned to play the piano and practiced for 6 months before the filming started.[17] Thereafter, he casted for the live action film of Wolf Girl and Black Prince and TV series A Girl & Three Sweethearts. Kento was also chosen to star in the special short movie[18] to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Yasuhisa Hara historical manga Kingdom as the main character, Shin. Premiered on the website of the manga on April 18–19, 2016. He reprised the role of Shin in the Live action feature film which will be released on April 19, 2019.[19] In 2017, he co-starred with Haruna Kawaguchi in One Week Friends.[20] The film received some good ratings from the critics, which mostly praising Kento for successfully portrayed his role as Yuki Hase who is cheerful and friendly. Afterwards, he appeared in another live action movie such as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I, Psychic Kusuo: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. and Hyouka: Forbidden Secrets. As end of 2017 he starred in the TV series Rikuoh.[21]

In 2018, Kento plays as a host in Kiss that Kills, which was his first drama lead role.[22] This drama also stars Mugi Kadowaki, Mackenyu and Masaki Suda. His film A Forest of Wool and Steel was released too, where he played a piano tuner.[23] For that role, Kento stayed at Hokkaido to learn and practice piano tuning. During a special screening of the film, Emperor and Empress Japan were attended the event and meet with the casts.[24][25] On summer 2018, Kento starred in TV series Good Doctor.[26] The drama receive a positive response when it first aired, continues to the next episodes. Kento acting as an autistic doctor who has a savant syndrome gets lots of praise and recognition from the audiences.[27][28] It was the first time he acts as a doctor and take a more challenging role.

His next project is upcoming live action film of Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku scheduled to be release on 2019.
