Katpadi Junction is an important and busiest railway station in Southern India, at Vellore city suituated in Tamil Nadu. It is a Major railway junction in Southern railway and one of the oldest junctions in India.The station is located on Chennai-Bangalore city main line , Katpadi- Gudur Branch line, Bangalore city - Howrah main line, Chennai central-Mangalore main line, Katpadi- Villupuram branch line, Chennai central - Mysuru main line and Chennai central -Coimbatore main line. This is one of the cleaner and well maintained railway stations, and one of the top 10 revenue yielding railway stations in Tamil Nadu. All the trains Passing through this Junction halts here.It is located at the northern end of the city on Chittoor Highway connecting Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu and Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.People alight here for Christian Medical College and Vellore Institute of Technology .This railway station has Double line electrification.[1]

Layout

The station is served by five platforms. Platforms 4 and 5 primarily serve trains bound from and to Vellore Cantonment, south Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. More than 150 passenger trains pass through Vellore-Katpadi Junction every day.

Platforms 1 to 3 primarily serve trains bound to Chennai, Bangalore, Howrah,New delhi,Mumbai,Kanyakumari,Coimbatore and Kerala.[2]>

Facilities

A food plaza maintained by IRCTC is located on platforms 1 and 2. Platforms 1, 2 and 3 also have refreshment stalls, including Aavin milk booth, coffee shops, hotel, book stall and fruit stalls. Toilets and bathrooms are available on platforms 1, 2, 3 and 5. An ATM is located at the main entrance. A digital board at platforms 1 and 2 shows the departure and arrival of trains with coach numbers. RPF Police station is located at platform 1. Parcel booking office and Railway Mailing Service (RMS) are available. Waiting rooms for upper class and sleeper class passengers are available at platforms 1, 2 and 3. A separate waiting hall for ladies is also available.

This station has five counters for unreserved tickets in platform 1. Reservations for long distance trains are located at the main entrance of the railway station in a separate building. For passengers' security, the southern railways has installed cameras on all the platforms.[3]

Transportation

Vellore New Bus stand is 7 kilometers from Katpadi station. Vellore New Bus Stand is the hub which connects to all other cities as well as local places nearby. It has both local buses and outstation buses available. Bus facilities connecting the railway station to the other parts of the city are available right outside the station. Taxis and autos are the other primary modes of transport.

Trains

Nearly 245 trains hauls this Junction except Chennai - Madurai duronto and Howrah - Yeswantpur duronto and Chennai -Yeswanthpur weekly express. Nearly 110 trains passes this station daily. Major commuters to Katpadi Railway station are people who travel to Vellore Golden Temple, CMC Hospital and VIT University. On an average it servers close to 18,000 passengers everyday and has got 11 originating trains and 67 passing trains everyday[5].The daily average sale of unreserved tickets from Chennai Central to Katpadi Junction was 2,280 persons coming to Vellore.[6]
