James E. McPherson (born c. 1955) is a retired United States Navy officer and government official. He is the current General Counsel of the United States Army. Previously, McPherson served as the executive director of the National Association of Attorneys General. McPherson previously served as the general counsel of the Department of Defense Counterintelligence Field Activity. He was the 39th Judge Advocate General of the Navy from 2004 to 2006.[1] Before his career in the Navy, he was a military policeman in the United States Army.[2] McPherson is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Meritorious Service Medal. In October 2017, McPherson was nominated by President Donald Trump to become the General Counsel of the United States Department of the Army.[3]
Education
McPherson graduated from San Diego State University in 1977 with an undergraduate degree in Public Administration.[1] He received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1981 from the University of San Diego School of Law, and in 1991, he was awarded a Master of Laws degree in Military Law from The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, Charlottesville, Virginia.[1]
