Flip Learning - An Iconoclastic History in Making @ JIS College of Engineering

The Flip Learning initiative, apart from branding as the pioneering event or calling it for the first time in India would sound more like a cliché, so we would rather term it as an unparalleled iconoclastic event in the history of Indian Education. Flip Learning is all about being well informed along with being well educated. It puts a permanent end to the miseries of the students either of being always at mercy of limited knowledge domain of a teacher or being all the time passive consumers of the information - day in, day out. While we are fostering a whole new generation of digitally native students, our teaching & learning methodologies almost dates back to the seventh century; that is of the golden days of Takshashila & Nalanda. When a recent survey glaringly points out that about 64% of our fresh graduates are not acceptable by our industry & corporate sectors, it opens up the proverbial Pandora’s box questioning the best practices that we boast of and it calls for a pause to identify the reasons and define strategies to bridge the gaps. Flip Learning fortunately bridges the gap between their ability to consume information and ability to talk about & apply the information that they have consumed in a coherent & intelligent way. That is in Flip Learning students carry out lower level cognitive tasks on their own before coming to class. These are basic tasks such as understanding and remembering at home. So once in classroom, students can concentrate on higher-level and more complicated tasks such as applying, analyzing, critically evaluating the concepts. At JISCE, in Flip Learning we transfer the knowledge to students before the class through course supporting materials which are all made digitally available well in advance. This way direct instruction is taken outside the classroom and the classroom itself is transformed into this exciting & dynamic interactive group learning environments and an indirect instruction space in which a teacher’s role is elevated to that of a moderator of a live brainstorming session. The concept of Flip Learning is not really new as it has been successfully adopted at several Universities across the World. The introduction of this concept was initiated last winter by Dr Malay R Dave, Principal who has over five years of experience in teaching in Flip mode in the South Pacific. After several introductory sessions & workshops, both with faculty & students, an informed decision was taken by the management to bring about this concept at JISCE. As to accommodate the Flip Learning, we have already provided seven smart classrooms and more are in the pipeline. A studio will also be provided 24x7 both for the students and the faculty to record their digital contents at their leisure. Our initiatives have been appreciated by both Chief of Global Initiative of the World Bank Dr Francisco Marmalejo, Dr Cesare Onestini, Mission Head, European Union in India & Professor Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman, AICTE, who himself set through one of the Flip classroom sessions here in our campus and launched our in-house publication on How to Flip Your Classroom?
