International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis (Azerbaijani: Dünya Azərbaycanlılarının Həmrəyliyi Günü) Inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall, the nationalist Popular Front of Azerbaijan called for and lead the removal of borders between Soviet Azerbaijan and Iranian Azerbaijan on December 31, 1989. This has since been celebrated by Azerbaijanis around the world as the International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis.[4] and is a public holiday in Azerbaijan.[5]

History

Today’s history is related to removal of the Azerbaijan border between Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic and the Iran (USSR - Iran Border) in 1989. Meanwhile, the Conference of the Turkic People was held in Istanbul. To celebrate the solidarity of the world Azerbaijanis was decided at the conference.[6]

On December 16, 1991, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, Heydar Aliyev, declared December 31 as the World Azerbaijanis Solidarity Day, taking into account the importance of a unity of world Azerbaijanis. Thus, 31 December is the Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis, which is holy to all Azerbaijanis. Around 50-million Azerbaijanis across the globe celebrate this holiday. They are proud of this day and very proudly celebrate it.[7][8]

December 31 - World Azerbaijanis Solidarity Day is celebrated by Azerbaijanis in more than 70 countries around the world. Solidarity Day became the most important holiday for the Azerbaijani diaspora, and even Holiday of World Azerbaijanis Solidarity Day is considered to be more important than the Holiday of New Year for Azerbaijanis. This Day is a symbol of the desire to unite.[9]
