Indonesia national under-19 football team (also known as Merah Putih (Red and White) or Indonesia U-19) represents Indonesia in international football competitions such as AFC U-19 Championship, AFF U-19 Youth Championship, and any other under-19 international football tournaments. It is controlled by the Football Association of Indonesia. The team itself has won the 2013 AFF U-19 Youth Championship and 1961 AFC Youth Championship. The team just once entered the FIFA U-20 World Cup, in 1979, replacing Iraq.

History

1961 AFC Youth Championship

Indonesia national U-19 team won the title together with Burma (now Myanmar) in 1961. At that time, it was confirmed that only 10 teams were divided into two groups.

Indonesia is in Group A with South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore and Japan.

But, in the top party, Toni Pogačnik team was playing a 0–0 draw with Burma. As a result, these two countries were crowned as joint champions.

1979 FIFA World Youth Championship

Indonesia national U-19 team has tasted the sweetness of competing in the event as big as U-20 World Cup 1979 in Tokyo, Japan. Although only the World Cup category age group, but still keep its own prestige. Moreover, when Indonesia is a group with Argentina is reinforced by a player who is currently a world legend, Diego Maradona.

The struggle of the Garuda Young team trained by Soetjipto Soentoro towards the World Cup at that time was quite tortuous. They had to start the journey through the 1978 AFC Youth Championship. The rule then, the two teams that managed to qualify for the final party are entitled to grasp tickets to the U-20 World Cup 1979.

Indonesia managed to qualify for the quarterfinals with status as runner-up group A after playing twice wins and one defeat. But in the quarter-finals, Indonesia must lose to North Korea. Long story short, who managed to qualify for the final party is South Korea and Iraq.

As both teams qualify for the finals, they deserve to qualify for the Under-20 World Cup in 1979 to represent Asia. Unexpectedly, Iraq withdrew from their participation to the U-20 World Cup at that time. Similarly, when the quota is offered to North Korea and Kuwait as the third rank at the same time reject the opportunity.

Remaining teams in the quarterfinals of Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. However, again the team from the Middle East, rejected the quota. The team's refusal was inseparable from the political elements that led many teams to resign in the U-20 World Cup in 1979.

And luckily Indonesia was the only remaining quarter-finalist team. Yes, they got an empty slot. Unfortunately, poor results envelop Indonesia in the U-20 World Cup 1979. Direct met Argentina in the inaugural match, Indonesia was defeated with a landslide score.

The defeat continued against two team, Poland and Yugoslavia teams. As a result, Indonesia came home with zero points, without entering and conceding 16 goals throughout the tournament. And it can be predicted, who became the champion then was Argentina, who for the first time holds the title.
