Bali United Football Club is a professional football club based in Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia that competes in Liga 1, an official competition that replaced Indonesia Super League.[3] Nicknamed Serdadu Tridatu (Tridatu Warriors),[4] the club was founded as Putra Samarinda in 1989, changed its name to Bali United in 2015, and moved its current stadium to Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium in the same year.

History

Foundation and Early Years (1989-2003)

The club was formed in 1989 as Putra Samarinda Football Club. Putra Samarinda competed in Galatama and later in Liga Indonesia since that competition formed in 1994/1995.[5]

Merge with Persisam (2003-2014)

Putra Samarinda was experiencing financial difficulties since Galatama and Perserikatan merged into one competition. In 2003, Putra Samarinda and Persisam, Perserikatan club that funded by APBD Samarinda merged to form Persisam Putra Samarinda[6] and used Putra Samarinda license to compete in Liga Indonesia. In 2008/2009, Persisam Putra Samarinda won the Premier Division and was promoted to Indonesia Super League[5]

Bali United era (2014–present)

To improve their marketability and higher chance of success, Persisam Putra Samarinda declared a name change to Bali United F.C. The team was relocated from Samarinda, East Kalimantan to Gianyar, Bali. Harbiansyah Hanafiah, the main commissioner of Bali United explained that he did the name change and moved the homebase to Bali because there were no representative from Bali in the highest football tier in Indonesia.[7] Another reason was due to local fans in Samarinda prefer to support Borneo F.C. more than Persisam.[5]

Bali United compete in AFC competition for the first time in their history as a result of becoming runner-up of 2017 Liga 1. They represented Indonesia because the champions, Bhayangkara F.C. failed to obtain an AFC licence.[8] The club made their debut in the AFC Champions League on 16 January 2018 with a 3–1 win over Tampines Rovers FC in the preliminary stage round 1.[9] But they failed to make it to the group stage, because they lost 1–2 to Chiangrai United F.C. in the preliminary stage round 2.[10]

Stadium

Bali United plays their home matches at Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium after moving their homebase from Samarinda to Bali.[11]

For the primary training ground, Bali United uses Trisakti Field in Legian and Banteng Field in Seminyak.[12]

Colours, Mascot, and Chants

The club colors are officially red, white, and black based on the sacred color Tridatu and used for the team jersey,[13] which then led to the nickname Serdadu Tridatu (Tridatu Warriors).[4]

The mascot of Bali United is Jalbo (Jalak Boys) that takes shape of Jalak Bali. Jalbo is the mascot from Northsideboys 12 for Bali United.[14]

The official anthem of Bali United is Rasa Bangga, or Pride in English, composed by The Resistance band.[15] The anthem is always sung by all the fans, players, and staffs of Bali United after home or away game since the first time started in 2017 Liga 1 match against PSM Makassar on July 23, 2017.[16]

Supporter and Mascot

Their supporter is called Semeton Dewata, that comes from the word Semeton meaning brother and Dewata meaning Bali's nickname, Island of Gods. There is also Lady Dewata for female supporters. Semeton Dewata usually fill the east stand of Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium. There are two bigger supporter groups, Northsideboys 12 that fill the north stand and Brigaz that fill the south stand.[17][18]
