Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is an autonomous premier engineering and technology university in Dharwad, India. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Dharwad started functioning from July 2016 in a temporary campus, previously of the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Belur village on the outskirts of Dharwad city.[3] It was formally inaugurated on 28 August 2016.[4] For the academic year 2016-2017, it offering B.Tech courses in three core branches: Electrical, Computer Science, and Mechanical.[5]

As part of the mentorship plan, IIT Bombay is the mentor for IIT-Dharwad. The HRD Ministry has set up an IIT monitoring cell at IIT Bombay. The committee members were designated as officials on special duty to supervise the process of setting up IIT Dharwad.[6][7]

History

With the Ministry of Human Resource Development giving its approval for an IIT in Dharwad, the 17-year wait ended. The late Union Human Resources Development Minister S. R. Bommai had moved the proposal to the Centre seeking an IIT in Dharwad in the 1990s. In 1998, a committee headed by former ISRO chairman and space scientist Udupi Ramachandra Rao submitted its report recommending an IIT in Hubballi-Dharwad.[3][8] In the 2015-16 union budget, an IIT was sanctioned for Karnataka state and the state government suggested three locations. The short-listed cities were Dharwad, Mysuru, and Raichur.[9]

The high powered committee appointed by the HRD ministry chose Dharwad city, after visiting the cities. Leaders from all political parties, plus a few prominent citizens, including a few ex-NRIs from Dharwad (Dr Datt Kulkarni) put a lot of effort to get this prestigious institute to Dharwad city, as there was much competition.

Campus and location

IIT Dharwad is initially functioning out of the campus of the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Dharwad near the Karnataka High Court Bench. A permanent building is coming up at Chikkamaligawad village.

Around 500 acres belonging to KIADB near Mummigatti on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway off Dharwad was identified for the IIT campus, but that deal was cancelled due to legal hurdles. The State Cabinet decided to allot 470 acres of land at Kelageri village adjunct to Mammigahtti Industrial Area in Dharwad district.[10] The historic Kittur Fort is 20 kilometers from the campus.[2] (The city also houses educational institutions like Karnataka University, Karnatak Science, Arts and Commerce College and University of Agricultural Sciences, Law University.[11] Also, new institutes like the IIIT Dharwad[12] are coming up in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad.[2] There is also the NTTF tool and die making educational institute at Dharwad.)

There is an airport at Gokul Road, Hubballi, the twin city of Dharwad. The airport has air services connecting to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kochi. There is a railway station at Dharwad through which trains from Bengaluru to Goa run. Hubballi Junction is the major railway junction which has train connections to Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Howrah, Chennai, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Kolhapur, Solapur, Vijayawada and Vasco among others. The twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad host the manufacturing plants of Tata Motors, Kirloskar Electric and Elmeca, among others.

Cultural and non-academic activities

The twin city of Hubballi-Dharwad offers opportunities to enjoy classical music (Sawai Gandharva, Mallikarjun Mansur, Gangubai Hangal and Bhimsen Joshi hail from this region), fine arts and theatre (dramatics).[2] The city is home to many literary personalities like Girish Karnad, D.R. Bendre, Vinayaka Krishna Gokak — all Jnanpith Award winners — to name a few. The twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad have many theaters which show films in Kannada, Hindi and English languages.

Departments, centers, and schools

Forty seats each in the streams of Computer Science, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering are available at the institute. Classes began in 15 July 2016, along with the other IITs across the country.[13]
