India at Big Four international beauty pageants

The following is a list of India's official representatives and their placements at the Big Four international beauty pageants, considered the most important in the world. The country has won nine victories in among three of the Big Four pageants:

The criteria for the Big Four inclusion is based on specific standards such as the pageants global prominence and prestige approved by worldwide media, the quality and quantity of crowned delegates recognized by international franchisees and pageant aficionados, the winner's post pageant activities; the pageants longevity, consistency, and history; the sincerity of the pageant's specific cause, platform, and advocacy; the overall pre-pageant activities, production quality and global telecast; the enormity of internet traffic; and the extent of popularity amongst pageant fans across the globe.[1][2][3]

India's Big Four titleholders

India won its first Big Four major international pageant title when Reita Faria from India bagged the Miss World 1966 title becoming the first Asian to win.[4] In 1994, Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe[5] In the same year, Aishwarya Rai added to the winning streak, picking up the Miss World 1994 title.[6] Diana Hayden then won the Miss World title in 1997.[7] Actor and model Yukta Mookhey was later crowned Miss World 1999.[8]

Six years after Sushmita Sen’s win, three Indians made a total sweep in 2000: Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza went on to win Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific International (predecessor of Miss Earth pageant) titles respectively.[9][10]

In 2010, Nicole Faria from Bangalore became the first Indian woman to win the Miss Earth pageant and in 2017, Manushi Chhillar won the Miss World 2017 title.[11][12]
