The Hyundai Kona is a subcompact five door crossover SUV designed by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai that was shown for the first time in June 2017. The production version made its debut later that year.

Naming

The Kona is named after the western district of the island of Hawai'i.[3]

Alternative names

The car will be sold in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai[4], as Kona is too similar to cona, the taboo slang word for the female genitalia in Portuguese. Like Kona, Kauai is a western island of Hawaii.[1]

In the People's Republic of China, the car will be released as the Hyundai Encino.[2][5]

Engines

From launch, the Kona will be available with a 1.0 litre, turbocharged direct injection petrol engine producing 120hp, or a 1.6 litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine producing 177hp, with 4x4 all wheel drive available on selected models.[6]

Kona Electric

Kona Electric

A battery electric version, with a 200 to 250 mile range, is expected to be released in Korea in 2018, with a market debut in the United States likely in 2019.[7][8][9] The version with a 64 kWh battery pack delivers an EPA-rated all-electric range of 258 miles (415 km).[10]

Safety

The Hyundai Kona body is made from high strength steel with 'hot stamping' and adhesives for added rigidity.[11] Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, lane keeping assist and a driver attention monitor. Other features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot detection and a rear cross traffic alert.[12]
