Hare Street is a road in the Indian city of Kolkata, Kolkata district, West Bengal, India. It connects the junction of Council House Street and Netaji Subhas Road at the south-eastern corner of B.B.D. Bagh to Strand Road.

History

Hare Street was constructed by the Lottery Committee.[1]

David Hare (1775-1842), Scottish watch-maker, philanthrophist and educator, used to live here and the street is named after him.[2]

Geography

Police district

Hare Street police station is part of the Central division of Kolkata Police. Located at 42, Chittaranjan Avenue, Kolkata-700069, it has jurisdiction over the police district which is bordered on the north by Canning Street; on the east by Lower Chitpore Road from its junction with Colootola Street to its junction with Bepin Behari Ganguli Street, thence by Bentinck Street to Dhurrumtolla Street, thence by Chowringhee Road from its junction with Dhurrumtolla Street to the south side of its junction with Surendra Nath Banerji Road; on the south by the southern limits of Auckland Road of its junction with Eden Garden Road, thence by the west side of Eden Garden road to its junction with Plassay Gate Road, thence by the southern limits of Lawrence Road to its junction with Mayo Road (south side), thence north along Government place East to its junction with Ochterlony Road, thence along the southern limits of Ochterlony Road to its junction with Chowringhee Road, across Chowringhee Road to its junction with Surendra Nath Banerji Road (south corner); and on the west by the western limits of Stand Road from opposite Canning Street to opposite Auckland Road.[3]

Taltala Women police station covers all police districts under the jurisdiction of the Central division, i.e. Bowbazar, Burrabazar, Girish Park, Hare Street, Jorasanko, Muchipara, New Market, Taltala and Posta.[3]
