Strand Road, also referred to as The Strand, is a major thoroughfare in the Indian city of Kolkata, running along the east bank of the Hooghly River, connects Prinsep Ghat to Nimtala near Shobhabazar through the downtown Kolkata.

History

The Strand Road was built in 1823, by the Lottery Committee, along what was previously a long sedgy bank. According to H.E.A. Cotton, in olden days, it used to run from Prinsep Ghat to Hatkhola Ghat and ‘a considerable portion of the riverbank has been reclaimed and thrown into roadway’. Among the prominent land-marks along the road were, Baboo Ghat, erected at the expense of Baboo Raj Chundrer Doss (husband of Rani Rashmoni) and was officially named after him. Opposite Baboo Ghat was Eden Gardens, a park with a cricket ground next to it. The next spot along the road was Chandpal Ghat, named after Chunder Nath Paul, who had a shop at the ghat for the ‘refreshment of pedestrians and boatmen’. The ghat was there in 1776. ‘Chandpal Ghat became the spot from where India welcomed and bade farewell to her rulers. Here it was that Governors General, Commanders-in-chief, Judges of High Court, Bishops and all who were entitled to the honours of a salute from the ramparts of Fort William first set foot in the Metropolis.’ The advent of the railways put an end to that.[1]

Police district

North Port police station is part of the Port division of Kolkata Police. Located at 67/3 Strand Bank Road, Kolkata-700001, it has jurisdiction over the police district which is bordered on the north by a line drawn due east across the river Hooghly from a pillar at the southern boundary of Messrs. D. Waldie and Company's Chemical Works and distillery at Konnagar in the district of Hooghly on the right bank of the river to a pillar on the left bank of the river near Panihati in the district of the 24-Parganas; on the east from the pillar on the left bank of the river near Panihati in the district of the 24-Pargans to the Cossipore Sarbamangala Ghat and thence to the junction of Strand Road, Strand Bank Road and Port Trust Railway at Ahiritola Ghat, all lands, buildings and railways as may lie between the outer wire-fencing of the Port Trust Railway and the river including the Port Trust Railway Station buildings which lie outside this fencing. From Ahiritola Ghat to Jagannath Ghat all lands, buildings and railways between the outer wire-fencing of the Port Trust Railway and the river. From Jagannath Ghat to Jagannath Ghat cross Road, thence along the south side of this road to the junction of the Port Commissioners and Mint property thence south along the boundary wall dividing the Port Commissioners and Mint property, Meerbahar Ghat Street thence west along the north extremity of Mir Bahar Ghat Street to the outer fencing of the Port Trust Railway. From Meerbahar Ghat all lands, buildings, warehouses, wharves, jetties and railways which may lie between the river and a boundary line running east up to the south side of Meerbahar Ghat Street to its junction with Strand Road and thence south along the western limit of Strand Road to the crossing of Howrah Bridge Approach Road, north-side and thence along the western limit of Strand Road to the extreme southern end of Outram Ghat landing stage, including all lands, buildings, etc., which lie between the river and a boundary line running south along the outer wire-fencing of the Port Trust Railway, as also the Mukram Lachmi Narain Dharamsala which lies outside this fencing; on the south by a line drawn from the extreme southern end of Outram Ghat landing stage to the north end of the Bengal Jute Mill building on Howrah side; and on the west by the river Hooghly and all that floats thereon, including the Howrah Bridge.[2]

Watgunge Women police station, located at 16, Watgunge Street, Kolkata-700023, covers all police districts under the jurisdiction of the Port division i.e. North Port, South Port, Watgunge, West Port, Garden Reach, Ekbalpur, Nadial, Rajabagan and Metiabruz.[2]
