Gregory Edward Abel (born 1961/62) is a Canadian businessman, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and vice chairman of non-insurance operations of Berkshire Hathaway since January 2018.

Early life

Abel was born in Edmonton, Alberta.[2] Abel earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Alberta in 1984, and is a certified public accountant from AICPA.[2][1]

Career

After university, Abel trained as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, and worked in their San Francisco office, before in 1992 joining CalEnergy, a geothermal electricity producer.[2] In 1999, CalEnergy acquired MidAmerican Energy, adopting its name, and Berkshire Hathaway acquired a controlling interest later that year. Abel became CEO of MidAmerican in 2008, and the company was renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2014.[2]

In January 2018, Abel was named as Berkshire Hathaway's vice chairman for non-insurance operations and appointed to Berkshire's board of directors.[3]
