Gaurav Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana (Nepali: गौरव शम्शेर जङ्गबहादुर राणा) known as Gaurav Shumsher JB Rana was Chief of Army Staff of the Nepalese Army between September 2012 and August 2015. He is a descendent of Shamsher Rana family of Nepal through then Maharajkumar Baber Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana.

Family

General Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana is a great, great grandson of Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana; the great grandson of Babar Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, grandson of Mrigendra Shumsher, and son of former Major General Aditya Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana who is married to Mrs. Rohini Rana. The couple has two daughters, two grandsons and two granddaughters.[1]

He was educated at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States.[2] He is an alumnus of The Lawrence School, Sanawar. He was one of the first Nepalese to be sent to sanawar after his mother decided to send them where they could stay with his maternal cousins.

Military career

General Rana started his military career in September 27, 1970. He has successfully commanded Shree Taradal Gulma (Independent Infantry Company) and the Shree Purano Gorakh Battalion. A second-generation officer of the Purano Gorakh Battalion, which is one of the oldest unit of the Nepalese Army and a battalion of ethnic Magars, he led this unit in active operational duty during UNIFIL Lebanon in 1978 to 1979 as a Regimental Officer. In 1987 and 1994 he was appointed as Senior Assistant Military Information Officer, UNIFIL Force HQ and Battalion Commander respectively during the UN Mission. The following Commands was held by Rana in his career.
