G. Tammegowda Devegowda (born 25 November 1949) is an Indian politician from State of Karnataka and a minister of higher education in the cabinet of H. D. Kumaraswamy. His political party is Janata Dal (Secular) .He is the son of Late Tammegowda, a farmer. He is married to K. Lalitha and he has two daughters D. Annapoorna and D. Yashodha, and a son G. D. Harish.

GT Devegowda won the Hunsur Karnataka Legislative Assembly seat in 1998 and also in 2004. He was Co-operative Minister and District In-Charge Minister of Mysore in 2007.

He contested and elected again in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, 2013 for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Chamundeshwari Vidhanasabha Constituency. GT Devegowda was also the president of Karnataka Housing Board. During Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, 2018 he won by a margin of 36000 votes against incumbent chief minister Siddaramaiah.[4]

Achievements

GT Devegowda was elected as the secretary of Gungaralu Chatra Co-operative Society in 1971 and won best secretary of Mysore Division Award in 1973. He was appointed as the president of co-operative society in 1982. GT Devegowda contested for APMC Election and served as vice president in 1983 and appointed as director of TAPPMAC in 1986. GT Devegowda won Ilavala Zilla Panchayath elections in 1987. During this time he served as Mysore Yuva Janata Dal president and appointed as the Director of Mysore District Centre Bank. GT Devegowda was the president of Mysore Zilla Panchayath from 1995 to 1997. Also got appointed as the president of State Co-operative Union in 1995 to 1998 and again re-elected for the same post in the year 2001.

Political career

G. T Devegowda contested for Lok Sabha election in 1996 and lost for 10,000 votes and selected as the secretary of Karnataka Regional Janata Dal Party in 1997. Contested again for Lok Sabha election in 1998 and lost. In the same year he elected as the MLA of Hunsur Legislative Constituency. Contested from same constituency for the post of MLA in 1999 and lost. In 2004 G.T Devegowda contested for State Legislative Assembly from Hunsur Legislative Constituency and won. In 2007 he became co operation minister of Karnataka. He lost in the general election in 2008 and won from Chamundeshwari Constituency in the year 2013. G. T Devegowda has played a lead role in waiving loan of Rs. 656,800 farmers. Each farmer has got nearly 25,000 loan waived and the total amount of 20 billion were spent for this purpose during his tenure as co-operative minister.

In Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, 2018 he was reelected again by defeating Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah from Chamundeshwari (Vidhan Sabha constituency). He is the current Higher Education Minister of Govt of Karnataka.
