Friulians or Furlans are an ethnolinguistic minority living in Italy and elsewhere. About 600,000 of them live in the province Friuli and in parts of Gorizia and Venice. Their language, Friulan, is a Rhaeto-Romance language distinct from the rest of the languages spoken in Italy. It is the second largest recognized minority language in Italy after the Sardinian one. Genetically, Friuilians are more closely related to the peoples of Austria and Slovenia than to the rest of Italy, forming a genetic isolate.[3]
