Fernley High School

Fernley High School (also known as FHS or just Fernley School) is coeducational, four-years flagship secondary school located in Fernley, Nevada, United States, east of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. It has one of the most extensive Advanced Placement, Honours and engineering programs in Lyon County & Nevada.[1] The majority of the students come from within Fernley and Nevada schools. The school has drawn thousands of nationwide and international students since 1990s.[2]

Fernley School is the flagship school of the Lyon County School District system. Vaqueros is the school mascot. The principal, as of the 2016–2017 school year, is Kent Jones. The school color is orange, black and white.

History

Founded in late 1920s, Fernley High School's original old buildings were demolished in the early 1960s and were located on the block now occupied by the In-Town Park near the old downtown area between US 95A and Center Street.

Fernley High School is currently located off US 95A on the south side of town, near the former home of Amazon.com which has relocated to nearby Reno. Prior to 1980, the high school was located at the current Fernley Intermediate School on Hardie Lane.

Facilities

Fernley High School has extensive athletic programs, program centers and student clubs. It has broad array of educational facilities including Fernley Adult Education Center, etc. and partnership programs such as Upward Bound, etc.[3][4]

Since late 1970s, the new campus of Fernley High School has built wide range of academic facilities, library, laboratories, centers for architecture, engineering, computer/information systems & vocational, as well as considerable number of sport facilities & programs, including football stadium, baseball field, track and field (athletics), basketball indoor arena, gymnasium, fitness center, winter sports and golf programs, etc. It has extensive student meal program, dining hall and catering facilities. It is currently dealing with overcrowding, rapid growth, and improving campus facilities.[5]
