European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, or ESCMID, is a Swiss-based scientific international organization involved in the prevention of infectious diseases.

History

It was founded on 12 February 1983 in Munich as the European Society of Clinical Microbiology.[1] In 1990 it was decided to include infectious diseases.

Structure

It is headquartered in Basel in the Swiss Basel-Stadt canton. Many parts of the World Health Organization (WHO) are in Switzerland.

The current President is Mario Poljak[2] of the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The executive director is Judith Zimmermann.


Function

It publishes the monthly journal Clinical Microbiology and Infection. It is involved in microbiology research.
