Esen Altuğ (born 1963) is a Turkish diplomat and ambassador of Turkey.

Private life

Esen Altuğ was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1963.[1]

She completed her secondary education at TED Ankara College and then graduated from the Faculty of Political Science, Ankara University.[1][2][3] She earned a Master's degree from International University Audentes in Estonia.[1]

She is married to diplomat Ömer Altuğ, who has two children from his previous marriage. The couple has a daughter Defne together.[1][3][4]

Career

Altuğ joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985.[2] Her early service included maritime and aviation matters until 1988. She served as Third Secretary at Turkish Embassy in Cairo, Egypt (1988–1990) and North Nicosia, Northern Cyprus (1990–1991). Returned home, she worked at the Department of Maritime Affairs for two years in the position of a Second Secretary. Between 1993 and 1997, she served as Consul and then as Consul General in Münster, Germany. Back at home, she worked as Head and Deputy Director General of the Department for Western Europe until 2001. Altuğ interrupted her career for four years until 2005 taking unpaid time off. After her return to the Ministry, she was posted in the Department for Energy, Trans-boundary waters and Environment as Deputy General Director until 2007. Her next foreign mission was as Consul General in Rotterdam, the Netherlands from 2007 to 2011. After working two years as Deputy Director General at the Department for Multilateral Economic Affairs, in particular the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation,[1][2] she became Deputy Director General of the Department for Migration, Asylum and Visas serving until 2016.[1][2][5]

Altuğ was appointed Ambassador of Turkey to Slovenia taking office on 29 November 2016.[1][6]
