The four primary families within the superfamily of Testudinoidea are Emydidae, Geoemydidae, Platysternidae, and Testudinae. The family of Emydidae is further subdivided into the subfamilies of Dierochelyinae and Emydinae. The family of Geoemydidae is further subdivided into Geoemydinae and Rhinoclemmydinae.
