Delhi Public School, Bathinda (or DPS) was established in 2003 at Goniana Road, Bathinda in the state of Punjab in India.[1] It is a day residential senior secondary school on a campus of 14 acres (57,000 m2) with facilities for swimming, horse riding, football, basketball, hockey and cricket. It is affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education New Delhi. The school had 1429 students and 90 staff as of September 2009. It also has two single-sex hostels.

The founder principal was Dr. T C Williams. The present principal is Dr. Arun Jee.

Campus

Delhi Public School, Bathinda

The campus is spread over 14 acres (57,000 m2), on the main Bathinda-Goniana Road, VPO Bhokhra.

The hostel blocks are away from the school buildings but within the campus. The hostel complex has a girls' hostel and a boys' hostel. A recreation room, common room and laundry are provided in the complex.

Students from Thailand

The school is the first in the Malwa Region to have students from Thailand.

Student Council

The Student Council is a body of student representatives consisting of Cultural secretary, Academic secretary, Sports secretary, Literary secretary, Event Coordinator and Discipline secretary led by the Head boy and Head girl assisted by Vice head boy and Vice head girl. There are also house representatives consisting of the house captains and vice house captains both boys and girls. They are in charge of controlling and conducting programs, school discipline, sports activities, and cultural programs and activities.[2]

House System

There are six houses in the school: Chenab, Ganga, Jhelum, Ravi, Sutlej, and Yamuna. The houses have their house and vice house captains for both girls and boys.

Each student from class IV onwards is allotted one of the houses. Each house is headed by a girl and boy House captain. A member of the staff assisted by several other teachers(tutors) acts as the House Warden. Points are awarded to the students for extra-curricular activities through inter-house competitions in sports, dramatics, debates, quiz, art and music. At the end of the year, the house gaining the highest points is awarded the championship trophy.

Clubs

The school clubs activities are held on Saturday:

  • Literary club.
  • Eco club: The club takes care of the environment of the school and spread awareness regarding environment.
  • Science club: They make creative models of what they study in the class.
  • Sports club: This club is for the students who have been selected for the teams.
  • Art club: The students learn about art and craft and make crafts.
  • Health & wellness club: The children learn about health and wellness and do Yoga.
  • Editorial club: The club edits the school newsletter and other documents.
  • Bloggers’ club: The students take care of the school pages, and maintain the schools standards in the virtual world.

Sports

The school has teams for basketball, hockey, football, lawn tennis, ball badminton, cricket, archery and net ball, training for these teams is conducted after school hours. Seven students were selected for the national camp for ball badminton, basketball and judo.

Sampark

Sampark is a school newsletter which is published every month. It gives detail about all academic and co-curricular activities that have been carried out in the school during the month. The editorial club collects information about the activities and writes articles for the newsletter. This newsletter helps in improving the literary skills of students and has created many young editors.

Activities

  • The students of DPS drove home the message of a cracker-free Green Diwali in Bathinda in October 2011 to create awareness of the hazards of bursting crackers during Diwali festival.[3][4]
  • The school hosted the inter-DPS football tournament in October 2008.[5]
  • DPS organised its annual exhibition Kritee:2011.[6]
  • The swearing-in ceremony of the new students council of DPS Bathinda was held on 18 May 2011.[7]
  • An anti-cracker cycle rally was run by students and teachers on 22 October 2011 in Bathinda
  • DPS organised its annual exhibition Kritee:2012.
  • The school conducts inter-house competitions and inter-school competitions between the schools of Bathinda city.
  • The school completed ten years in 2013 so the school asked students to design a logo and a motto to celebrate.
  • The school was the centre for cbse board examinations of classes 10th and 12th for the academic session of 2017-18.

Achievements

  • In the inter-DPS Vocal Music competition organised at DPS Amritsar in May 2011 DPS Bathinda secured third position in the group song and second in the solo song.[8][9]
  • DPS won the inter-school round of the Limca Book of Records QUIZ-2011 organised by Derek O'Brien and Associates, on 30 August 2011.[10] It won the inter-DPS North Zone Cricket Tournament held 12–15 August.[11]
  • The school organised a Winter Carnival on 25 December 2012 which was open for the civilians besides the students, included stalls with games, snacks, along with some dance and singing performances.
