Davidson Kempner Capital Management LP (“Davidson Kempner”) is a global institutional investment management firm with approximately $30.9 billion in assets under management as of January 31, 2018.[3][5] The firm was founded in May 1983 by Marvin H. Davidson and is led by Thomas L. Kempner, Jr. and Anthony A. Yoseloff, who are Co-Executive Managing Members at the firm.[6][7]

Davidson Kempner is headquartered in New York City, with additional offices in London, Dublin and Hong Kong.[2][8][9][10] As of June 30, 2017, Davidson Kempner was ranked as the 13th largest hedge fund in the world.[11]

Davidson Kempner has approximately 315 employees in the firm’s four offices.[4] The firm is headquartered at 520 Madison Avenue in New York, New York.[3][12]

Investment strategies

Davidson Kempner uses a fundamental analysis, bottom-up approach to make its investments.[9][13] The firm focuses on five investment strategies: merger arbitrage, distressed investments, long/short equity, convertible bonds arbitrage and long/short credit, with a particular focus on distressed investments and merger arbitrage.[3][14]

History

Davidson Kempner was founded in May 1983 by Marvin H. Davidson and was initially named M.H. Davidson & Co.[9] In December 1984, Thomas L. Kempner, Jr. joined the firm and was promoted to Partner in 1986.[17] The firm opened to outside capital in 1987 and was registered as an investment adviser with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1990.[12][15] Thomas L. Kempner, Jr. was appointed to Executive Managing Member of the firm in January 2004.[18] Anthony A. Yoseloff joined Davidson Kempner in August 1999 and became a Managing Member of Davidson Kempner in January 2004. Mr. Yoseloff became Co-Deputy Executive Managing Member in January 2012, the sole Deputy Executive Managing Member in January 2013 and Co-Executive Managing Member as of January 1, 2018.[7]

Management

Thomas L. Kempner, Jr., is Co-Executive Managing Member of Davidson Kempner Capital Management.[19] He joined Davidson Kempner in December 1984. Mr. Kempner became a Managing Member of Davidson Kempner Capital Management in January 1986 and was appointed Executive Managing Member in January 2004. Mr. Kempner graduated from the Harvard Business School in 1978, with distinction, and from Yale College in 1975, magna cum laude. Mr. Kempner is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Central Park Conservancy, a member of the Board of Trustees of Harlem Village Academies, a member of the Board of Directors of Harvard Management Company, and a member of the Boards of Trustees of Mount Sinai Health System, Inc. Mr. Kempner also serves on the board of the USA Cycling Development Foundation and the investment committee of The St. Bernard's School in New York.[12][18][20][21]

Anthony A. Yoseloff is Co-Executive Managing Member at Davidson Kempner Capital Management.[22] He joined Davidson Kempner in August 1999 and became a Managing Member of Davidson Kempner in January 2004. He became Co-Deputy Executive Managing Member in January 2012, the sole Deputy Executive Managing Member in January 2013 and Co-Executive Managing Member as of January 1, 2018.[23] Mr. Yoseloff co-manages the firm’s distressed investments department. He received a J.D. from Columbia Law School and an M.B.A. from the Columbia Graduate School of Business Administration in 1999. He earned an A.B., cum laude, from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1996. Mr. Yoseloff is on the Board of Directors of DonorsChoose.org, a not-for-profit organization, and also serves as the Chairman of its Audit Committee.[20][23] Mr. Yoseloff serves on the Board of Trustees of Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library. Mr. Yoseloff serves on the investment committees of the NYPL and the Trinity School in New York and is a member of the Board of Directors of PRINCO, the investment manager of the Princeton University endowment.[22][24][25]
