The Daihatsu Ayla (Japanese: ダイハツ・アイラ, Daihatsu Aira) is a city car, designed by Daihatsu and manufactured by Astra Daihatsu in Indonesia. The Ayla is also sold by Toyota as the Toyota Agya (Japanese: トヨタ・アギア, Toyota Agia), and in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Brunei as the Toyota Wigo (Japanese: トヨタ・ウィゴ, Toyota Uigo).[1][4][5] The car is also rebadged, redesigned, and manufactured in Malaysia by Perodua as the Perodua Axia.[6]

The name "Agya" was taken from the Sanskrit word meaning "fast", while "Ayla" means "light".[3]

History

The car was announced and showed at the 2012 Indonesia International Motor Show as Toyota and Daihatsu's answer to the Indonesia government's plan for the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) program. Initially the car was available for advance booking after the show but it only lasted for few weeks because the manufacturers were waiting for the government to finalize regulation regarding the LCGC. The Agya and Ayla used the same 1.0 L 1KR-DE three-cylinder engine in Indonesia until 2017.[2][7]

The first Agya and Ayla were rolled off assembly line at Karawang plant on October 25, 2012, and entered mass production in September 2013.

After a year since it was announced, Agya and Ayla were officially launched and sold to general public on 9 September 2013.

In July 2013, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) announced they will import the Agya in December to compete with the Mitsubishi Mirage.[3] It would have a different name for the Philippine market.[8] In January 2014, TMP announced that the car will be called Wigo,[1] and would use the same 1.0 L 1KR-DE three-cylinder engine as the Aygo.[9]

2017 update

The Agya and Ayla were updated on April 7, 2017. Both updated version use the same 1.0 L 1KR-VE (for the Agya only) and 1.2 L 3NR-VE four-cylinder engine as the Daihatsu's Sigra, while the 1.0 L variant of the Ayla still uses the same engine as the previous version.[10][11] This update includes new bumper designs, projector headlamp with LED side lights on some variants, LED taillamp, dual airbags, 3-point seatbelts, steering switch controls, side impact beams, and improved interior quality.

In September 2017, Toyota Motor Philippines issued a recall notice on over 15,000 Wigos produced from April 5 to December 15, 2017. The affected units have a faulty engine wire that may break from engine vibration, resulting in a decrease in engine power and a warning light illumination.[12]

Ayla Turbo Concept

The Ayla Turbo is an one-off concept car that was shown at the August 2018 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. It is based on the 1.2 L version of the standard Ayla. The 1.2 L 3NR-VE engine has been modified extensively by fitting a turbocharger with 1 bar (15 psi) of boost that uprates the power output to 147 kW (197 hp; 200 PS) and torque to 242 N⋅m (178 lbf⋅ft). The interior has been stripped down in order to gain lower weight and the roll cage has been added, along with FIA-certified Sparco racing bucket seat. The AC and other unnecessary features has also been removed. The car is still currently in developmental phase.[13]

The Ayla is only available in Indonesia in nine different variants; seven of them are available with a choice of an 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission, and three of them offered in 1.2 L 3NR-VE engine. The nine variants are:[14]

  • 1.0 D+ (only with 5-speed manual transmission)
  • 1.0 M (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.0 X (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)

  • 1.0 X Airbag (with dual airbags)
  • 1.2 X (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.2 R (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.2 R Deluxe (with aero kits)

Toyota Agya/Wigo

In Indonesia, the Agya is available in three different variants, with 1 variant offered with 1.0 L 1KR-VE engine and 2 variants offered with 1.2 L 3NR-VE engine. All of them has dual airbags while the TRD S variant is available with ABS and available with a choice of an 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The four variants are:[15]

  • 1.0 E (only with 5-speed manual transmission)
  • 1.0 G (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.2 G (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.2 TRD S (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)

In the Philippines, the Wigo comes in three variants:

  • 1.0 E (only with 5-speed manual transmission)
  • 1.0 G (with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission)
  • 1.0 TRD

In Sri Lanka, the Wigo is offered in 1.0 G and TRD S trims with only the automatic transmission available.[16]

In Brunei, the Wigo is offered in 1.0 G automatic only. It was launched in July 2015.

Marketing

Toyota Motor Philippines launched a massive marketing campaign for the Wigo, featuring actors John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo.[17][18]

Awards

In the Philippines, the Wigo has been awarded Best Micro Car of the Year by the Car Awards Group for 2014–2015.[19]
