Dürrüaden Kadın (16 May 1860 – 17 October 1909, birth name Hatice Voçibe) was the third wife of Sultan Mehmed V of the Ottoman Empire.[1][2]
Early life
Dürrüaden Kadın was born on 16 May 1860 in Sochi, North Caucasus. Born as Hatice Voçibe, she was a member of Abkhazian nobel family, Voçibe. Her father was Mustafa Bey Voçibe. She had two brothers, Murad Bey and Aziz Bey.[3] She was the aunt of Inşirah Hanım, second wife of Sultan Mehmed VI.[4]
Hatice had been brought to Istanbul as a young child, where her father entrusted her to the imperial harem. Her name according to the custom of the Ottoman court was changed to Dürrüaden.[5]
Marriage
Dürrüade married Mehmed on 10 October 1876 in the Veliahd Palace.[6] Mehmed was thirty two years old, while Dürrüaden was sixteen years old. Two years after the marriage, on 23 June 1878, she gave birth to her only son Şehzade Mahmud Necmeddin.[7]
On 27 April 1909, after Mehmed's accession to the throne,[8] she was given the title of "Üçüncü Kadın".[1][9]
Death
Dürrüaden died on 17 October 1909 in the Vadildebağı Palace,[6] and was buried in the mausoleum of Gülüstü Hanım, Fatih Mosque, Fatih, Istanbul.[9]
