Chichester by-election, 1942

The Chichester by-election of 1942 was held on 18 May 1942. The by-election was held due to the death of the incumbent Conservative MP, John Courtauld. It was won by the Conservative candidate Lancelot Joynson-Hicks.[1][2]

Candidates

Due to the wartime electoral truce between the Coalition government parties, the Conservative candidate Joynson-Hicks could not expect to be opposed by either a Labour Party or Liberal Party opponent. However, he was opposed by two independent candidates. One was A.A.W. Tribe and the other was Gerald Kidd.[3] Before the outbreak of war, Gerald Kidd had been adopted by Chichester Liberal association as their candidate for a general election expected to take place in 1939/40.[4] Kidd was a local solicitor who had joined the RAF in 1940.
