Carmel Convent School refers to a group of Catholic schools in India. Branches operate in Delhi, Giridih, Gorakhpur, Bhopal, Khopoli, Faridabad, Chandigarh, Gwalior, Kolkata, Durgapur, Mancherial, Mahanagar, ujjain, Nathan and Gujarat.

History

These schools were developed in England mainly for the purpose of educating orphans. Parents unable to educate their children would leave them in front of the church and the church would take complete responsibility of the orphan.

The school was founded in Bayonne, France on 16 July 1868, by Mother Veronica of the Passion. It was established in India on November 19, 1870.

The Congregation : The Apostolic Carmel - The congregation of the Apostolic Carmel was founded in 1868 by Mother Veronica of the Passion in Bayonne, France, and established at Mangalore, India, in 1870. Following the path of the Carmelite Tradition of St. Teresa of Avila and of Mother Veronica the Sisters, in India, try to combine in their lives contemplation with apostolic activity according to the needs of the time. The focus of their apostolic service is ‘Christ in His brethren-the church and the world’. The Congregation tries to fulfil the purpose of its existence through the education of youth in the various schools, colleges, technical training centres, hostels, children’s homes, crèches and schools for the differently abled, established throughout India, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Bahrain, Pakistan and Africa. It aims at developing the students entrusted to its care into committed people who should be the leaven in their milieu, putting love and meaning into human life and endeavour.

Schools

The Educational Institutions of the Congregation of the Apostolic Carmel, a Catholic Minority (under Article 30(1) of the constitution of India) cater to the educational needs of Catholic children. They are open to children of all castes and creeds.[3]

Delhi

Carmel Convent School, New Delhi, founded on July 16th,1957, is one of the institutions conducted by the Congregation of Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel. Carmel Convent is one of the most prestigious schools in Delhi. It is a girl’s school with approximately 2000 students on its rolls.

Mahanagar

Carmel Convent School is a girls-only school and is located in Mahanagar, Lucknow (UP). The school is promoted by the same missionary which is running the Carmel school in Delhi and elsewhere.

Giridih

Carmel Convent School is located in Jharkhand, India. It was established in 1954 and is affiliated to ICSE board, New Delhi.[4]

Gorakhpur

(Two schools - one affiliated to the Board of Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. And the other - affiliated to the U.P Board, Allahabad - are established in close proximity to each other in Civil Lines, Gorakhpur.)

CARMEL SCHOOL, GORAKHPUR - started on 21 January 1941, then known as St. Mary’s School in Civil Lines, Gorakhpur, is a Christian English Medium School, affiliated to the Board of Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, on 7 August 2005.

Carmel School is administered by the Carmel Sadan Society of U.P. in the Roman Catholic Church. The school is under the religious jurisdiction of the Catholic Bishop of Gorakhpur.

CARMEL INTER COLLEGE, GORAKHPUR -

Carmel Inter College, then known as St. Mary’s School, was founded on 21 January 1941. It began as a Primary school with English as its medium of instruction. The sisters Sr. Marie Antonette, Sr. Joan and Sr. Bernadette lived along with the boarders in St. Joseph’s church compound, Civil lines. In July 1945, class VII was opened for the wards of the anglo- Indian railway officers with the idea of preparing the students for the Senior Cambridge but due to the political situation, it had to be changed to matriculation. In 1957, the medium of instruction for classes VI – X was changed to Hindi medium and the school was recognized and got affiliated to the U.P Board, Allahabad. St. Mary’s was renamed ‘CARMEL’ in 1970 and in 1971 school opened Intermediate classes in response to growing pressure. It was granted recognition for Arts in 1972 and for Science in 1973. Seeing the popularity of the school and increasing demand for English medium Carmel Inter College was recognized in 2001 by the education department from class VI-XII as an Intermediate College with Hindi and English as the medium of instruction. Later in 2003, it started the commerce stream too. At present the school is governed by religious jurisdiction of the Catholic Bishop of Gorakhpur and is administered by the Apostolic Carmel Educational Society, U.P. with its headquarters at Lucknow, with the strength of 1500.

Chandigarh

Carmel Convent School, Chandigarh founded on July 16, 1959, is one of the institutions conducted by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters.

The school is recognised by the Directorate of Education of the U.T. Administration. It is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Bhopal

Carmel Convent School was established by the Sisters of the Congregation of Mother of Carmel (CMC) in 1968. CMC is a religious congregation of sisters who dedicate their lives to the betterment of their fellow citizens, with a focus on women and children.[5]

The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi from April 1994 and managed by the Carmel Convent Education Society.

Gwalior

Carmel Convent Senior Secondary School Gwalior was founded in 1957. It is managed by the Teresian Carmel Education Society. It is a girls school having classes from LKG to XII. The school is affiliated by the CBSE board, New Delhi.[6]

Jorhat

The Carmel Convent School of Jorhat is located at Cinnamara area of Jorhat. It was founded in 1973. The School is affiliated to the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education(ICSE).

Digboi

Carmel Convent School of Digboi is a Secondary School located in Muliabari, Digboi. It was established in 1966 and is affiliated to ICSE board, New Delhi.

Ujjain

The Carmel Convent School of Ujjain is located at the famed area of Ujjain. It was established in 1997 and it is affiliated to CBSE board, New Delhi.

Carmel group of schools are known all over India, like their other counterparts around the world.

Gujarat

The Carmel convent school in Gujarat is been located in the city Junagadh. The school was established in the year 1964.
