Introduction

The main purpose is to celebrate birthdays in an ancient Vedic way. People having birthdays in a particular month perform this homa, on the first Sunday of their birthday month.

The ritual starts with invoking Lord Ganesha and Kuladevi and concludes with purnahauti. Birthday Havan is an ancient Hindu way of reaching one prayers to Paramatman with vedic mantras. Ingredients like cereal, ghee etc. are offered to Agni and it reaches the Parmatma to fulfill the desired object of Havan or Yagna. Another important aspect is giving one's Nakshatra(Birth Star) to the priest conducting the Havan.

There is a taboo about blowing candles off on birthday cakes, as an extinguishing lamp is considered to be equivalent to the soul leaving body after death. The fire of birthday homa signifies health and long life. This auspicious Havan fire is worshiped and Agni is invoked to carry the offerings to Ishwara. Birthday Havan is done for in order to live a healthier, longer, and successful life.[1] The event is open for people of all ages, sex, economic background, jati.[2]
