Basmath or Basmat is a city and a municipal council in Hingoli district in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Basmath had a population of 57,360. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Basmath has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 58% of the males and 42% of females literate. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There are 3 degree colleges Bahirji Smarak Mahavidylaya Vasmath and Yoganand Mahavidylaya, and Raosaheb Patange arts college. Also along with many near by site seeings. Schools like Bahirji Smarak Vidyalaya,Sarswati Vidya Niketan, Mahatma Gandhi Vidhyalaya are well known in the town. It has 100 years old Shiva temple and also has Gurudwara named Gurudwara Dumdama Sahib. There is a small village named as Shivpuri at 3–4 km distance from Basmath Bus Station which is famous for its 100+ years old Balaji Temple.

Basmath is the only tehsil in Hingoli district which is well irrigated and having well agricultural land.

Basmath has a cosmopolitan culture as five major communities (Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain) have resident in the city, it reflects the real culture of the India where people live together with great happiness though they are from different culture, state, language, community. There are many industries in the town out of which The Purna Global Textile Industry Pvt. Ltd. is the most well known and provides employment to many workers which belong to the town and nearby villages. It also has two sugar cane industries named as Purna Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana (PSSK) and Shri Tokai Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana

Basmath is also famous for its market. Major agricultural products available here are soybean, turmeric, ground nuts, etc. The turmeric market of Basmath is well known for its quality produce. Turmeric is supplied to North India on a large extent and is also exported out of the country. There are many well known traders in the town with a major role in turmeric market. Other crops such as soybean, groundnuts, etc.


The area of the Basmath city is full of agricultural opportunity but due to non availability of workforce many things are not able to be grown.


Hingoli district is classified as a "NoT A Industry Zone" and hence a culture of industrialisation has not developed nor the government of Maharashtra has taken any interest to develop the region. Despite this fact there is plenty of industries operating in areas such as Biofuel, Sugar Cane and Cotton.
